I bet the people at Movie Central are mad. The ratings for Dexter this week in Calgary must have been horrible.

Pretty much disappointed there wasn't more turnover in the Aldermen ranks

What did you expect? Your post was equally as ignorant as mine.
Great, your candidate won, good for you, and good luck to him. The people have spoken, and I have to accept the democratic process.
I personally found it a little lame and troubling that the first tweet our new mayor made upon realizing his impending victory was to reference a soon to be forgotten, pop culture, karaoke, so-called icon that is <3'd by a bunch of 12 year old girls. It was lame and embarrassing. However maybe it is fitting reference as I can guarantee you his fate will be similar. He was the sexy, flavour of the month pick, but it will fade when people realize that his fairy dust, and unicorn magic promises need to be approved by city council first. He will be a punchline that people can't wait to get rid of. Quote me on it, bet me on it, whatever you want. I guarantee we will only see three years of Nenshi.
Nenshi does not represent one thing I personally stand for, nor does he represent the people that truly drive this city, and bring affluence and jobs to it. Gay clubs, homeless buskers and slam poets are all fine and dandy, but they do not drive the local economy. I know the whole University crowd is all hung up on OMGZ! He went to Harvard, but education doesn't necessarily make a great leader. The best leader this city and province has ever seen barely got out of High School.
I think Barb "I'm running for mayor because my friends told me so" Higgins is to blame for this debacle. Had she not thrown her hat in the ring, I believe McIver would have run away with it. So Nenshi supporters, you can gloat in victory, but just because I do not support, nor buy into the hype, that does not make my opinion any less valuable. Don't forget, 62% of the people polled did not support this man, and those 62% will be out in droves next time around.
The big difference I am already seeing is the polarity among the voters. In previous elections, if your candidate did not win it was meh... oh well I guess the best man won. This time, however, the losing camp is po'd, whether you were a Higgins or McIver supporter.
So I will back away from the keyboard now, and prepare for the onslaught of flames I will see when I open this thread tomorrow morning for voicing my insignifigant opinion. However, next to Olympics Opening Ceremonies thread, this has been the most entertaining ones I can recall in recent memory regardless of which side you were on.

That's a very sophisticated take on the situation. Kudos.

It might surprise you to learn that not all Albertans view Ralph Klein as a great leader.

So democracy only counts if a candidate breaks a certain percentage threshhold? Would you feel the same way if your man was out in front?

On what are you basing this? Because you are PO'd? You're gleaning a lot of insight about the electorate's state of mind that seems to be contrary to what they just decided.

Throughout this campaign, there has been so much talk about the broken Council we've had for the last 3 years, but at the end of the day, it looks like only one of the incumbent Aldermen (Fox-Mellway in Ward 14) is actually going to get replaced.
Of those who were re-elected, only a couple of the races were even close (and Farrell appears to be set for a pretty large victory after being in a tight race through the early numbers).
Because of the vacated seats, we will have 6 new members of Council with Nenshi and the five new Aldermen, but there certainly wasn't a "throw out the bums" mentality in the voting process. I guess it shows that even if there was a general dislike of the previous Council, people also generally liked the jobs that their own Aldermen were doing.
Either that, or people focused so much on the Mayor's race that the Aldermanic ballot was an afterthought and they went with the name they recognized (hopefully not).

Scrutineered, then Naheedquarters, then the Rhino... just catching up now. This thread is full of so full of win. Damn bitter Higgins and McIver supporters, robbing us of our five stars!

Leger polling has way too many Mount Royal University teachers in its management, among other flaws. A mistaken poll that gave false hope, at best. A dishonest one at worst.

Alas, poor JJ, we hardly new ye. Calling it after 574 votes is hilarious. 500 person telephone poll is a much more random sample than the first 500 reported votes. Talk about not understanding polling biases at all.

Exciting times for our city.

1 vote, and and a mandate. If council rejects his platform, after citizens voted it in, you can bet the purple army will be doing everything they can to turf their asses in three years. Minority votes against probably won't do this, but majority votes probably would.

I do a touch of academic work on analysing campaigns at the office, not a pro by any means, but hot damn did Nenshi take the cake on this campaign. I love the underdog.

"Preliminary 2010 voter turn-out is 53.2% of eligible voters compared to 32.9% in the 2007 General Election." - Calgary Election Facebook Page
Wow. Team Nenshi's internal prediction was 38%.

Good solid fourth place for Joe Connelly! Way to go, Joe! It's shameful that Global or Shaw didn't show his speech last night.

LOL Higgins and McIver are so bitter... apparently Nenshi only won because he went negative. (Awww he pointed out their flaws... truth hurts much?)

First time I've voted in a non-federal election, so Nenshi got this lazy middle-aged white conservative out to vote. Considering I was only interested in this campaign initially because I know Kent Hehr from law school, that was well done. Sad to see Slava went down, and disappointed my moronic alderman (DCU) survived...
