I think there is confusion on that for some people. We make fun of football for ignoring domestic violence. This is different. Illegal crap is illegal, but family and personal problems are not in the realm we need to know about.

A GM would need to determine if all of the baggage a person brings with him is going to be a good fit for the team.

If we're going to go after smallish, expensive RWs then forget Patrick Sharp. Go for Oshie.

Jeez, after seeing what Petry just signed for. The UFA's I was hoping the Flames would look at are going to be right out of the ballpark.
Guys like Ward, Stoll, Franson, Erhoff, Stafford, they're going to get raises for petes sake!
Man, I hope the Flames attack the trade route and the draft real hard.
And then the goalies..... bye Ramo!

Oshie doesn't play like a small player. Depending on what the Flames would have to give up I would be ecstatic if they could somehow land him.

Do the Flames really need to do that much retooling? With all the youth coming through the system, a full season of Bennett and a healthy Giordano we're looking pretty good.
If there's value to be had on either the trade market or the UFA market then go for it, but there isn't a desperate need to dive into either.

Good. Free agency is great business for the players and bad business for the teams. Burke has been pretty public about the terrible deals that get thrown around on July 1st and I'm hoping the Flames stay out of the big names and look for more sensible deals like last year that don't put the team in any future cap risks. I'm a believer in keeping the cap space to retain your own players rather than overspend for good but not great players.

Sensible UFA's may include:
Scottie Upshall (I've always felt like he'd be a good fit on the Flames, more so now too.)
Ryan Wilson
Eric Fehr
Martin Havlat (Bonus points for being made of glass and the kids will have plent opportunity to play some minutes while he is injured)
Mike Santorelli
Matt Bartkowski (who knows what you will get, thought he'd make the full time jump last year, got passed over by a couple of other D men)

Seems like the foregone conclusion is that Vancouver will try to get Bartowski.
Apparently the word is that both Benning and Weisbrod really like him. (Not really surprising in Weisbrod's case because Bartowski was originally supposed to be part of the return in the Iginla to Boston trade).

Scoring Winger

Grain of salt warning. Pure speculation.
Apparently (according to a friend of mine - Leaf fan) there has been some talk between the Leafs and Canes regarding potentially trading Semin and the 5th overall for 24th overall and a roster player, possibly Kessel. If it were Kessel there would probably other pieces involved. If there is any truth at all to this, could Calgary even compete without giving up the 15th?

On defense, we need to be better. The corp as it sits, even with Gio, is not very good. It is average and that's fine if all you're wanting to do is make the playoffs. If you want to win and push for a cup, then we need better.
The only thing I would add up front is a good top two line RW like a Justin Williams.

I'm hoping we can sign McQuaid and Sekera on D. Sign a winger like Williams like you said or trade for a winger like Oshie and/or Sharp.
The wing positions and D definitely need to be upgraded. Hopefully Treliving can pull off some steals especially from teams in cap troubles.

Yeah maybe Bartkowski, that might work.. Could he be a #5/#6 with potential to get to #4?

I would assume a package of:
15th
45th
Hiller
Jorris/Granlund
for
5th
35th
Ward
Semin
Depends if Carolina's purpose of trading 5th is to shed salary
Although reclamation projects, both have potential to thrive with more icetime and a change of enviroments. Both proven high levels of success in the past.
Calgary moves up a total of 20 draft spots for eating 21M (Approx) in salary over 3 years

Would stay clear of any bidding war with the leafs... They are prepared to go scorched earth this season so they could throw in prospects, young roster players, etc. to get 5th overall... and I don't want the flames overpaying for it.

What about the idea of signing a guy like Williams to ridiculous $$ and short term? Would he bite?
Doesn't put us in cap jail when its time to sign all the kids. Gives him great financial stability for say 2 years which he can invest and grow interest on the rest of his life. Gives kids like Poirier a chance to develop to hopefully take over his role down the road.
somethings like 15mill for 2 years. give him 10 the first and 5 the next so 7.5 AAV.
Somewhat absurd concept, but thoughts? Considered cap circumvention?

10m @ 1YR AAV makes way more sense even though it is essentially throwing money away. We have a TON of cap space next year. We might have NONE in 2016-17.
