How?
They'll have ~20M to sign Tkachuk, a goalie, Bennett and four depth players. That's super doable without moving Stone and Frolik. With moving them, that's a ton of space.

You're forgetting Hanifins deal isn't factored in yet either.
plus 2 unsigned D men.
Bennetts season could push him into Frolik money.
Tkachuks getting at minimum Monahan or Gaudreau money.
There's room yes but not as much as one may think.

I think the benefit with frolik is that Treliving probably doesn’t feel the need to move him but that he could be traded if the value is there. I think he’s a fantastic player to have in the bottom six and that was an area of weakness on the team last year. With the additions of guys like Lindholm, Neal, Ryan and Czarnik... plus the young guys like Foo, Eat Bread, Klimchuk and Dube who could be ready to make the jump... there’s a decent chance the flames will have plenty of options to choose from to make sure the team has more depth. As suggested above, Treliving could see if anyone takes the opportunity and moves frolik further down the depth chart to the point where he could be traded.
The benefit with frolik is that he can be effective on a lower line as well because his two-way game is so solid. Brouwer and versteeg seemed out of place in a 3rd/4th line role on this team. Frolik won’t be.

In my opinion Frolik and Stone will need to be moved next summer to make way for the Tkachuk/Bennett (hopefully) extensions and a Smith replacement.

There's 19M in room next year right now using today's cap ceiling. That does not include Hanifin's deal, but that does also not include the cap raise. I assume that most of his contract would be "eaten up" by the raise. That's highly dependent, but somewhat reasonable.
So 19M to sign:
Tkachuk (6.75M)
Goalie (5M - highly dependent)
Bennett (3M)
Hathaway replacement (1M)
Lazar replacement (1M)
Kulak replacement (1M)
Valimaki/Anderson/Kylington (0.8M)
Total of 18.5M.
Yes, if Hanifin signs high or Bennett earns a huge raise, Frolik or Stone would need to be moved.
But moving both Frolik and Stone and still be tight? That's another 8M...
I think Stone and Frolik could be moved if internal prospects push for their jobs, especially Stone. But the idea that both have to be moved for cap reasons is pretty much not a concern unless they are trying to sign Seguin.

Well I think the biggest factor out of everything is goalie. If they sign Bobrovsky, that's a lot more than re-signing a 37 year old Smith. 5M seems like a pretty good middle point, but they might be allocating anywhere from 2M to 8M to the next goalie signing.

Even if Bennett has a 50 point season he can be bridged again. As one good season would t have earned him a big contract in my opinion.

I think we should wait and see if the team is good before we worry about the cap and keeping everyone
another bad year and you can blow it up IMO

Blow it up! Meh
With how young the core is I can see this season coming up short. The fan in me looks at this team on paper with a smile, but they are pretty young with a lot of new parts.
All I can say is if we miss the playoffs we better fluke out and get the better Hughes brother! Lol be funny to get him and make the nucks cry!
Saying that I'm super excited for the season and if the goaltending is decent I expect the playoffs.

True, but if you see Gio as one of our top players that isnt getting any younger and factor in how many seasons Johnny and Mony have under their belt this team's core as it sits may never get any better then this season. if players like Hanifin and Valimaki can turn into 1/2 Dmen then its a different story.
even Tkachuk is in year 3 and would be the youngest of the current 'core'.

I imagine the first choices for penalty killers for the flames right now would be backlund-frolik, jankowski-Ryan, and maybe lazar/Hathaway.
|
Bill Peters didn’t heavily lean on Ryan to PK in CAR so I don’t think he’ll be used here heavily either. More likely to see Ryan on the PP from the sounds of it.
Might see Huska’s influence on this next year as he utilizes guys who killed penalties down in Stockton for him. Jankowski/Hathaway are two possibilities as you noted. Could see Bennett there perhaps as well. Lazar makes some sense to me too.

Stone could very well move this year if the younger dmen push hard enough.

If I’m an opposing GM, I do not take this player at 3.5M without compensation. He was terrible last season. If Treliving can get rid of him for any picks at all, I will be thrilled.
Conversely, I think Frolik is a great player and very underrated on this site. But if the Flames need to create cap space then they may have to move him because Stone may be impossible to move a la Brouwer.

Aaron Portzline says the Rangers are Panarin's first choice destination.

Other teams on Panarin's preferred list are the Islanders, Kings, Lightning, Panthers, and Stars.
