Delicious result tonight after how insecure hf Oilers has been all year around the "PDO Canucks" since the season-opening ass kicking.
Oiler fans have posted big talk ever since, eager to dismiss those games as a blip, and finally they get their shot to reel in the Canucks and prove themselves right - and the Canucks shut them down in textbook fashion in their barn.
The Oilers without McDavid also look about as mediocre as I expected. Without the wellfare saviour they looked like a glorified version of the 22-23 Flames. Similarly, full of aging secondary players (minus Draisaitl, but he's hardly been a straw-stirring guy this year).
And Staples with the kiss of death publishing that last article that took the arrogance to stratospheric levels. You always have that one epic article/piece right before the fall that immortalizes some stupid phrase in E=NG lore, i.e. rearview mirror.
The only team that can beat the Oilers is the Oilers, baby. They beat themselves good tonight.

Good post, except the part about playing well enough at the time to justify the contract. It was always an insane contact and nothing he ever did justified it at the time.

The Bonfire of the Oilers
Why am I so sure of these Oilers? There’s been a fire burning in the eyes of Connor McDavid all season. Now that same fire lights up Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. It’s in Nurse, Kane, and Hyman. It has spread to the role players, to the newcomers, and to the goalies.
It’s this fire that has me convinced of a coming Oilers victory. Do you see it?
it’s a bonfire of ambition and aggression. It’s burning on the fuel of the team’s talent, size and hard-won hockey acumen.
Good luck to any opposing team trying to put it out.
Compare that to this years write-up:
Quote:
McDavid, Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Darnell Nurse and other veterans like Perry and Mattias Ekholm are the captain and the henchmen on this Oilers squad.
There’s a seriousness and fierceness around this team that we haven’t seen before. You can see it in their stretches of outstanding defensive play. You can see it, I’ll suggest, in their on-ice demeanour and hear it in their post-game comments. They are tired of coming up short in the Stanley Cup playoffs, determined to do all they can to avoid losing out in 2024, and willing to hammer on toes to get there.
That brings me to the one team that can beat this Oilers squad. There is only one.
The Oilers have all the ingredients to win. They know how to do it. They know how to defend and to hit, to attack with patience and check with discipline. If they don’t win the Stanley Cup, they’ll have only themselves to blame.
No other team can beat them.
As you said, it's pretty well the same trash. When will they learn? It's beyond just drinking kool-aid and seems more like brain damage.

Why would he learn? He gets paid for this because it's what the customer wants. The Oilers fan does not want to read cogent thoughtful hockey analysis. The Oilers fan wants to read fawning tripe. Don't blame Staples for the poor quality of his audience. Blame him for being one of them.

Man, I can't believe Nurse is 29 years old now. I would have guessed a bit younger.
And to follow that up... I guess this is 'Prime' Nurse. A middling 30-point Dman

The media shills have been hyping up the ‘young’ Oilers so long, the Oilers grew old without anyone noticing.
Then they went and added a bunch of grizzled veterans who knew how to listen to the coach, which is why their team defence has been better this year. At the start of this season, they were the oldest team in the league.
So here are the Oilers, already over the hill, without ever having been on top. They conquered the mountain… horizontally!

My guess is if the Oilers are bounced early, there will be a compliance buyout awarded by the NHL. This will allow them to get out of the Nurse deal and take another run next year with the cap space and allow them to keep Bouchard.

Calgary would welcome that development.

You guess wrong. Compliance buyouts have to be negotiated with the PA.

You’re right. You guys have Derek Wills, we have David Staples. Has Wills conceded the Flames might not make the playoffs yet?
No no, remember anytime he gets called out for being a shameless (and clueless) homer he's just a "fan blogger" (whose blog just happens to be on the website of the biggest newspaper in Edmonton).

Even so, it’s a pretence at analysis. The equivalent would be maybe Eric Francis. Who may be a gadfly but he’s at least more intellectually honest and pretty free with criticisms.
I don’t even know who does Oiler radio PBP. It used to be Jack Michaels, and I dare anyone to prefer him over Wills (and I don’t even like Wills).

Yeah, I was mocking him, not defending him.
