There are several interesting threads on Twitter about the horrible maintenance of Russian military equipment. They were showing how the tires on a lot of the vehicles were severely sun damaged. No idea how accurate this is, but the guy claimed to be retired military. He was explaining that they are supposed to rotate the vehicles so the same tires don't get continual sun exposure, and park them close together to avoid sun damage. He surmised that some of the tires were exposed to sun for years. Another thread showed Ukranian civilians rummaging through abandoned vehicles and laughing at the food rations because they expired in 2015.

Ukraine needs only hold out. The longer this goes the more devastating it will be for Russia.

If the negitiatiosn are pointless, and Russia won't stop until Ukraine is utterly defeated, what real options exist? The west is forced to join in, and provoke nuclear war, or Ukraine is left to fall completely...and other outcomes here?
|
If I had to make a prediction, I’d say Russian forces occupy Ukraine east of the Dnieper River, as well as the Black Sea Coast, and isolate and besiege Kiev and Kharkov through the summer. Things settle into a stalemate, with increasing calls for intervention by the West, while opposition to the war in Russia puts pressure on the regime. By the fall, either some kind of ceasefire and negotiations that drag on for years, or Putin is toppled.

I don’t mean to be callous, but Russia has barely even begun to bring out the big guns. When they unleash their airforce and heavy artillery, casualties will rise into the thousands. In Grozny, a city an eighth the size of Kiev, between 5,000 and 8,000 civilians were killed.
In the Donbas War in the eastern Ukraine, 14,000 people have died without any decisive resolution. These things can drag on for a long time.

Once of the worst case scenario my wife and I are facing as I cannot get a hold of my wife any longer. She texted me today saying she was moving to a new location, as her village was extremely dangerous and they were moving to a cousin's house. I have no idea where it is or how they are getting there. Last I heard from her, she was able to send me a couple normal SMS texts saying she had no internet, and she made it to the new place. She tried calling me and it kept getting cut out and disconnecting. All I could make out was she made it and a message of love. Now I'm unable to make a connection to her by any method.. Have tried various apps, email SMS gateways and still nothing. Not sure if my messages are getting thru and she can't answer, or vice versa.
What a disaster the last week has been, and now this. #### you Putin.

I can't imagine what you are going through. Your friends at CP are with you man.
As tough as this is for you and her, thank you for sharing the story.
I hope so badly she, and her family, can get out..

As difficult as that must be not to be able to get in touch with her (hard to even imagine, honestly), based on what limited communication you were able to get, it sounds like her situation has improved and she's moved to a safer location, so I think that's probably a good trade-off for the loss of contact. I know, small consolation, but to a neutral observer this actually does come off as good news.

Yeah I'm hoping for that too. I just have to trust that her Step-Dad would make the choice to move if he knew it was safe for everyone. They know that area and have lived their most of their lives, so I just have to trust he made the best choice possible given what info he had. We've both been prepping for a disconnect ( we're surprised it's actually last this long TBH), so have to trust each other when we say we'll see each other again.

Unimaginable, dude.
And how are you doing? Do you have friends/support in Poland, or are you pretty isolated? We're all worried for your wife and her family, but also thinking of your situation as an individual in addition to what you're going through as it relates to your wife and in-laws. Anything you need?

I'm doing good given the circumstances. I've had a ton of friends, family and work colleagues reach out to me constantly by calling, messaging, video chatting and emailing to provide support and a way to let off steam. The online support on CP has been incredible. I've seen posters in the past lean on CP as an outlet and it's always been amazing to see. Never thought it would be my turn....
While I'm in my apartment alone in a foreign city and still suck at speaking the language, I don't feel alone. The support has been incredible from around the world, and for that I am extremely grateful!

What does the west still have for weapons in this economic counter-siege of Russia?
I fear that Russia has been sanctioned about as hard as they can be and it doesn’t seem to be effecting any changes yet. I expect that the west gets bored, Putin keeps doing what he’s doing, and then either Ukraine falls or NATO intervenes militarily, both of which are really, really bad outcomes. Maybe the sanctions will really take time to kick in and show the desired effect, but I’m not sure how long that wait should be.
I feel like this is a bit of a downer post and of course the present needs to be focused on but unless there’s a clear future goal and a way to get there then efforts can be futile.

To that guy who's wife is in no rush to leave Siberia, may want to accelerate that. Especially if airplane parts are no longer sent to Russia, the safety of those planes may become an issue.

When I laid my hands on Eastern Block equipment for the first time I was shocked at the #### quality of it and the complete utilitarian approach (which often missed the mark).
There is zero concern for comfort of troops, not only in vehicles but in personal kit. This was 1993 and they looked like they had stepped off a War World 2 battlefield.
Just appalling.
