I do tip but hate your thinking here albertGQ. I'd be perfectly fine letting the server or pizza delivery guy know beforehand, as long as they, in turn, are fine letting me and their manager know beforehand that with no tip they will be doing a crappier job.

The argument wasn't literal about discussing it, I believe, but more along the lines of "You shouldn't hide behind the fact they don't usually know the tip when you close the door or leave the restaurant" when choosing a tip amount or worse, to not tip at all.

I firmly believe that the people who hate tipping, complain about tipping, and are furious that servers can make HUNDREDS of dollars at their job are consistently having terrible experiences at restaurants owing to their own poor attitude.

Some people are just cheap and looking for any excuse to not part with their money.
We used to go out for dinner with another couple who were notoriously tight-fisted. One time they even refused to tip at all at Kinjo because they had taken half of their sushi plates form the sushi boat. And this after the staff had brought a free fruit plate for their daughter, brought drinks, and had been fast and courteous with the rest of their service. But they left no tip. Last time we went out for dinner with them.

The main reason I have always tipped well is that my mom was a waitress most of my childhood. She worked at a fairly divey place. The type of place that looked awful but had great food.
She would always tell me about people that would come in and order catfish dinners for 10 or 15 bucks a person and leave a quarter or 50 cents as a tip. I knew she always tried to make sure people had a good meal and would take it personally when she got tipped poorly and worry she did something wrong.
And for those on the 'just get a better job' train, it worked for our family as she was a single mother and they were flexible with her working odd hours depending on schedule.

What? I'm betting they put between 11 and 4 because that is when the hiring manager/owner/franchisee is there, and can hire on the spot if they like the applicant. I would have thought the job interviews would have been done between 1-4, to avoid both the lunch and dinner rushes, but maybe the lunch rush isn't that busy. I seriously have no idea why you are pointing out the interview hours, and why this would be a point of contention.

Not sure what one can do in the 30 seconds of interaction of ordering. You think somehow we're all ####ty enough that every server instantly avoids us?

I dont mind tipping for the most part, and my expectations arent unreasonable, hell, I'm the easiest person in the world, I have no problems tipping.
Its when it gets to the point that it becomes a constant and an expectation that I take exception to.
Look, do your job, do it just marginally reasonably well and I'll give you your 15% and be on my way.
But if you didnt provide a service, dont expect a tip.

Is that the correct read on this thread? Whenever I pay for anything these days, I am prompted for a tip. I totally understand why folks are annoyed by this. My approach to this is set up some rules for myself on tipping and I follow them pretty fastidiously. This thread has been useful though as it has made me realize I need to make some tweaks to my rules.

Exactly. Like the Delivery fee on take out orders. I was unaware that the driver does not get any of this.

Me too! Instead of being ok getting charged delivery because that's around what I'd tip anyway, I now realise I should be tipping on top of it, which makes delivery kind of crazy-expensive for the service it actually is.
And as we saw, some people were unaware that a lot of delivery drivers do, in fact, get an hourly wage. Or that tattoo artists should be tipped, or barbers, etc.
This thread has been good for some general knowledge if nothing else, as well as a few dos and don'ts I think.

If by a lot, you mean less than 1% then yes you were right. A major company in Calgary hires drivers and then they sub contract for a tonne of pizza/chicken/Chinese restaurants and they pay per delivery.
Pizza 73 hires their own drivers and pays per delivery.
99% of all delivery places on Calgary use this system because it saves them money. So you can try to act all smart but you were wrong all along.

Source? This just seems like a made up argument, without any facts.

Well yeah it is a made up number since they don't keep track of these things. It's probably higher than 99%. Which companies can afford to hire their own drivers? Not very many are busy enough on a day to day basis and the amount of drivers you'd need for a busy Friday night makes no sense to hire hourly drivers which is why the majority hire per delivery drivers.
As much as Pepsifree likes to write FACT he is in fact wrong. Such a stupid argument but if people aren't going to tip their delivery driver then they should at least know they aren't being paid minimum wage whether you tip them or not.

well, that isn't always true either. some places do pay the driver the whole delivery fee others do not, how the heck are we supposed to keep up with all the different industry pay schedules. Skip the dishes pays the delivery fee and all tips to the driver.

I mean, I name dropped Boston Pizza as factually providing the minimum hourly wage to their drivers, and you said Pizza 73 doesn't, so at best we're at 50/50 here.
Maybe I strictly love the taste of perogy pizza delivered to my door, so 100% of my delivery drivers are paid an hourly wage. BOOM, FACT.

Really it seems like the solution is to work for SkiptheDishes or one of the many 1% of places that apparently pay their drivers.

Eye-contact, genuine smile (even if a faked one), at my table within 90 seconds of me sitting down (if I wasn't lead to a table from the door), drinks within four minutes of ordering, food within 15 minutes of ordering (unless it was super fancy and needed more time), and all in all a general good attitude and I'll happily tip 20%, even if the kitchen ####s the bed. Its not the waitress` fault. But I also have no problem mentally rolling that number back in my head when things don't meet the standard.
