lol yes they do, unless they're doing it completely off the books and evading tax.
Boston pizza and basically every other major pizza place pays an hourly wage. That's fact.

Calgary is strictly per delivery and the going rate is $3.00-$3.50 a delivery.

No it's not fact. It's completely wrong. They don't have to evade taxes at all.
all they have to do is hire someone on a sub contract basis and pay them per delivery.

As I said, Boston Pizza in CALGARY pays an hourly wage, as do the majority of places. Fact.

So not only do they not have to own a vehicle and pay for gas and depreciate it, they also get hourly wages and tips? Sounds like the best deal ever. That doesn't strengthen your position here...

I don't need to strengthen it, I know for a fact. It's no wonder there's people who don't tip when they don't even understand how their delivery driver gets paid.
And notice the between 11am and 4pm? Why do you think that is?

I always tip and I tip pretty well. I know the servers and staff generally appreciate it and for the most part I get excellent service in most places. But in my heart, I hate it. I hate how it's a 'custom' here and you are looked down upon if you don't. Having travelled to many countries in Europe and around the world where it is in fact not customary, it GMG even more that it's so ingrained in our North American culture.

For people who choose not to tip, please let your server or pizza delivery guy know beforehand. If you think it's acceptable behaviour, you would have no issues being up front about it.

The problem with this is it emphasizes that service should be influenced
By tipping. It shouldn't.

I've heard this before from friends and family. Is this actually fact or is it speculation? I will continue tipping at those places until I know for sure it's all going to the owner. How do they continue to find people to work there if the owner keeps all the tips?

Even if Pizza delivery guys are paid minimum wage, the argument is that they're most often not compensated for mileage (gas, insurance, wear) which effectively means that they earn less than minimum wage if you stiff them a tip.

This is actually a really good argument for getting rid of tipping altogether. Although I can certainly feel for someone making a crappy wage doing a crappy job, it's not up to the customer to be intimately familiar with how every single service industry providor gets paid. I don't know how pizza guys get paid, it's not my responsibility. It's not unreasonable to think different pizza joints pay their drivers differently as well. All I know is how much I'm paying for the pizza, which should be the only thing consumers should care about. Employers need to charge however much it takes to pay employees enough to retain their services and make a profit and then the consumer can judge.

That's what one of the waitresses that works there tells us. I guess she could be BSing, but I'm not sure why she would. As to how they find people to work, they get paid a decent per hour wage, they just don't get any tip. Probably why service isn't the best at any of these places.

Well, it is acceptable behaviour, regardless of what you think. As a server, I expected that I would make extra money in tips, but I did not expect every single customer to tip, nor was it upsetting when someone didn't.
Much like the note issue, this kind of behaviour just reinforces the idea that the quality of work I put in would be based solely on the customer's approval, and not in any way related to personal standards or work standards.
If you take pride in doing a good job regardless of the extra thanks, your "solution" is condescending in my opinion.
That's just me though. Having been there, I still think we need to get rid of tipping altogether. It's past the point in a lot of jobs where you "need" it, and it reinforces a negative culture between the customer and the employee. Tipping should exist only when you, personally, think service was absolutely exceptional. There shouldn't be a standard.

I personally tip the pizza guy but I rarely order delivery. I will go out of the way to pick up my pizza myself because I don't like paying the extra delivery charge and a tip. I'm sure a lot of people see the delivery charge and think it's going to the driver though, that's not unreasonable at all. Which goes back to my point of it not being up to comsumers to know which places pay their drivers which way.
