gotcha. I'm starting to notice a pattern here... you're allowing trade offs on the specs when it suits your tastes and your purposes. when it suits someone else's tastes and preferences they fail your silly little challenge.
Its clearly a rigged game and unwinnable. In the end, use what you want.

How much is the smug, almost arrogant, self satisfaction worth?

So... about this Windows 7. I just installed it last night and I don't really notice any difference. I do like the 'snap' feature they added in and the fast sleep + restart/shut down. But this is not worth $130 or whatever they're selling it for. Heck, it's not even worth the $60 bucks I bought it for. This is essentially just a gigantic service pack from Microsoft.
Is there anything I'm missing that makes this the greatest thing ever?
Anyways, continue on... about macs vs pc's.

I got to about post 90 and stopped. This whole back and forth thing is kind of silly.
The analogy I use is to think of cars. You want transportation for you, your wife, and 1.8 kids. Loads of people are happy with a GM, Honda, or Toyota. Other people are not and want an Audi, Lexus, or an Infiniti. The first set of cars won't match the second set in say things like 0-60 times, top speed, or horsepower. They also probably don't have things like quattro, lights that turn when you turn the wheel, the same high end interior looks and other features. All the cars get you from point A to B though. it's just personal preference if you want/must have all the extras.
Same thing for a PC....and perhaps this will be a fun exercise. I'm in the market for a laptop. I have the following wants:
Light. 3.5 lbs is about the max, I want it under 4 for sure and the closer to 3 the better
Display. ~13" display with 1280 at minimum
Battery. I'll go with 6+ hours to get me through the majority of long flights I'd take
Processor. Something I can run photoshop (even an older version like 7) and play movies on. I don't need 1080p quality movies, but I want something with graphics capability.
The most game intensive thing I'd likely run is EA Sports games.
At least 2 GB RAM
At least 160GB HD, 250 or higher is gravy
Wireless. G is fine, I have nothing which runs N
As many USB ports as possible and the every popular SD slot
I don't care about webcams
I have no bluetooth devices
It'll never get hooked up to a TV so DVI doesn't matter to me
Find me the best PC and Mac deals with those specs please.

Nah, that's Dell for ya. Their memory upgrades are also heinous. I usually try to buy as little RAM from them as possible.

Perhaps I was being unfair or perhaps the point in moot. Honestly though, I'd like to know how close in price someone could get. I don't want a netbook but from what I've seen I can get a Winderz based laptop that match my specs for the 6-800 range. Not sure if I can get a Mac for something close to that, but I really don't know for sure. I see a price of ~1100 for a 4.7lbs Macbook or the price of ~1300 for a 13" Macbook which I'm not sure how heavy it is. That's the price off the Apple site so I'm not sure if that's a good comparison or if they are cheaper from Mac dealers.

Well, it will actually work decently on a machine with 1GB of ram. The whole start bar is completely redone and awesome. The themes thing is pretty cool.
Most of the real ROI type benefits are for the enterprise though for sure.

Wow are you serious?
It's a pretty simple concept to match specs. I'm not making this up as I go along here. I think you need to give your head a shake and stop taking this so personally. You couldn't do what I asked, so obviously I'm cheating?
I allowed the 30" monitor, even though it failed to match the LED back-lighting. I allowed it, because it was the first monitor used that would even come close to being the same price as the proper one. I'm sorry, but you're not going to get a 27" IPS panel with LED back-lighting and 2600 x 1450 resolution for $400 like someone you were trying to claim.
Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, my point was made all the way back on page 3. All this other crap has been going on for two days now. You guys keep dreaming up these configurations and trying to find sneaky little ways to prove me wrong, but I've called out every failed attempt. American prices, 24" monitors, vague references to "Core 2 Duos" that turn out to be 1.6GHz, half the hard drive size, missing video cards, using expired sale prices... etc etc.
Two days is more than I can take of this. If you guys are still unwilling the grasp the concept that an iMac might be EXPENSIVE but it isn't OVER-PRICED, than you're just never going to get it.
Peace out and all that jazz.

All this talk of dual booting reminds of of 7 year old Yeah_Baby using boot disks etc to play Tie Fighter.

You just won't let that go will you?
Do you really think I'm standing here pointing my finger and laughing at you? I know it was a mistake, but so what? American prices are not valid in Canada and the monitor you tried to use isn't even available in Canada, nor did it meet the LED back-lighting or resolution requirements.
I haven't insulted you at all, so why are you so bent out of shape about it?
I knew going into this that no one was going to be able to do it. It can't be done! I know it can't, because I am actually quite good at building and ordering computers. I've stated countless times what professional experience is.

me let it go? do you really want me to take the time and quote all the posts you mention it in? if i was at work i would, but at home thats a waste of time.
the reason i bring it up? because you use it as justification for your position as if it was an intentional trick to try and make you wrong. it was an honest mistake that i quickly corrected. and it didn't even change the outcome.
so i think its childish to continue to bring it up. and then to say i am the one that won't let it go? thats totally hypocritical.

Huh? I've only ever mentioned it as a direct response to you, or in a list with all the other invalid configs. What do you want me to do?
The monitor you used not only didn't meet any of the requirements, it's also not available in Canada.
I'm not going back and forth with you on this. I don't care how personally you want to take this, your configuration not only doesn't match all the specs, it's not even completely available in Canada.
Simple.

All-in-all, I-Hate-Hulse's config was easily the most reasonable. Yes, it sucks that Dell charges $350 for a 1TB HD, and I'd even be willing to substitute a $120 one from MemEx in its place. I can't allow an expired sale price though, because I can buy the iMac right now for its price, but I would have to travel back in time to get that 30" monitor on sale.
As far as the screen goes, there are 4 things that need to match:
Size: 27"
Tech: IPS
Light: LED
Resolution: 2560 x 1440
His screen exceeded the size, matched the tech and the resolution but not the lighting. Every other monitor either only matched the tech and nothing else... or nothing at all.

Actually, dobbles, I think I've finally just clued in on what you're asking me. You have a point, I knew it was an honest mistake from the start and I should have just left it alone rather than including it with everything else.
Sorry, I didn't even realize what I was doing there. I was just trying to figure out why it bothered you, so I reversed the roles and the answer dawned on me.

hopefully you're being genuine.
i guess in the simplest sense, i didn't want my mistake giving you more justification that people were unable to find comparable systems. the debate needs to focus on real issues and i didn't want my error to sidetrack things.
