I dont know if it applies to all BCS bowls, but for the Rose Bowl, residents of Pasadena get first dibs on tickets... you could imagine there's a little bit of a homefield advantage if the team from the Pac-10 is UCLA or USC.

Notre Dame doesn't travel that well - they're just similar to the Dallas Cowboys whereas they're the casual fan's favorite team. That's not to say there's a lot of hardcore Domer fans - they just have the most casual fans.
As Flames in 07 said, OSU fans will have their chance to fill that stadium and trust me they will.

Are you sure about that?
Major bowls like the Rose Bowl survive based on traveling fans. That's why when you see a playoff proposal that suggests making each round a different bowl it will never happen. The bowls survive because of fans traveling in from around the country and staying for several days, pumping money into the economy.

Positive - my aunt always seemed to get tickets to the Rose Bowl and I thought perhaps she was just lucky. Then I met a friend in law school who hadnt missed a Rose Bowl in 15 years... both of them are residents of Pasadena and get their tickets that way.
As for OSU, theyll make a good appearance and traveled well to Phoenix last year (trust me)... but it's in LSU's back yard... it's going to be a majority LSU crowd - not 90%... but a majority (65-ish). My friends, and administration, from OSU are somewhat concerned about that.

hmmm strange. Although the Rose bowl has been a bit of a maverick. At the very least each school is alloted a large share. I can tell you that the Fiesta sells about 7500 locally and that's it. Half of those tickets find their way into the hands of travelling fans.
EDIT Found some info, as I thought the majority go to the schools:
The Rose Bowl Game is a contractual sell-out each year with the majority of the tickets distributed by the participating teams and conferences. Every person, including children (no child lap passes), must have a ticket to gain entrance to the Rose Bowl Stadium.
There will also be a selected number of tickets on sale for Pasadena residents at the Pasadena Civic Center Box Office on Saturday, December 1, 2007. Pasadena residents must show a picture ID with a Pasadena address or valid California picture ID with a document establishing Pasadena residency
As for last year, that was their worst showing in their run in the desert. Against Miami they filled the stadium and did their O-H-I-O thing through the 4 sides of the stadium during commercials ... very impressive fans.

They travel ok to bigger bowls, but your right to non BCS bowls it's just the casual tag along fans that dust off their 1993 $20 ND sweatshirt.

I know JayP, I went on my rant as sort of pre-emptive strike hoping to minimize the non productive stat fests attempting to deligitimize LSU. I hate statistical arguments when it comes to college football. Unless you are talking about two teams in the same conference, I think they are irrelevant. There are too many differences in quality of opponent, and style of play to mine any relevant nuggets of information.
Quote:
You can say OSU is 1st in total D and LSU is 3rd, but that's misleading. Ohio State gives up 58 less yards per game than LSU - that's the same difference between 3rd and 35th. Oh yeah, 9 less points per game too. LSU's offense is better, but by about 50 yards per game and 6 points effectively cancelling out Ohio State's defensive advantage.
|
I think the fact that the amount of teams in the upper echelon of offenses/defenses each team has played makes a bigger difference. LSU had to score more points because the offenses they were playing were better. LSU's stats are also inflated on both sides of the ball due to the triple overtime games. Negatively for defense, positively for offense.
Quote:
LSU played Tulane, Middle Tenn. State, and Louisiana Tech. And people complain about Ohio State playing cupcakes. At least they do it based on helping fellow Ohio programs get some national spotlight.
|
I don't quite understand what you are trying to say here. Tulane and La. Tech are Louisiana schools they schedule to get some national spotlight. Tulane got a lot of pub when they were leading LSU at halftime. I posted OSU's cupcakes because that is one of the biggest gripes about LSU.
Quote:
I'm not saying Ohio State is sure to win, but a 3 TD win seems excessive for LSU. They can hardly beat a BCS opponent by 7 on a weekly basis, but they're going to destroy the best defense in the country? Ohio State's given up 21 points once this season, but all of a sudden they're going to lose by that much? I doubt that.
|
O.K. 14 points.
Quote:
And for those who think the fact that the game is in the Superdome, think again. LSU has lost at home already this season. More importantly, Ohio State fans travel as well as any in the country. For bowl games, tickets are split 50/50 in availability for both teams so don't be surprised when half the stadium is cheering for Ohio State.
|
I seem to recall an advantage in crowd noise in the championship in 2004 (2003 season), and last season's Sugar Bowl against two teams that travel very well, (Both in the Superdome). Maybe it was the play on the field that had the opposing fans sitting on their hands?

As for the teams - I dont buy OSU. You made some very good points JayP, but they beat teams handly that just arent very good. The beautiful thing is - we'll see in a month who's right.

Hey everybody!
I found a smokin deal on some tickets to the BCS Championship game!
I know the Canadian dollar is strong, so this should be a piece of cake...
http://www.stubhub.com/bcs-national-...t_id=100437946
Only $40,000 each for sideline plaza tickets! I think I'll hold out for the $35k upper deck tix.

I think the seller is just throwing that price out there to see if anyone will be crazy enough to bite.
As far as I know, Stubhub only charges sellers a fee if the tickets are actually sold.
I have a feeling the French Quarter would provide a more entertaining venue to watch the game during, and most definitely after!

maybe, but honestly it even says "take the family", he's gotta be joking.
Thus he's implying that someone is willing to plunk down somewhere between 120-160k for a set of tickets. People who have that kind of money to spend on tickets....don't spend money on tickets...they get them for free.

The funny thing about bowl games is that the tickets are far cheaper once you get down there on game day. Not too many people travel without tickets so the demand for tickets at the stadium is not as large as you'd think.
The best seats in the house for a BCS game would be about 2 grand in the parking lot.

ESPN has been reporting that Boise State has sold LESS than 200 tickets for the Aloha bowl.
That's just fugly.

well, truth be told, it's an expensive trip, and their fans have already shelled out once to travel to hawaii. not to mention that it's right before christmas.

Yeah, that's how I see it too. I'm sure a lot of them took extended vacations there too.
For Boise St. fans that Hawaii game was the biggest game of the season.

The Hawaii bowl would be well suited to play on Dec 31st or at least some time after the 25th.
