Keep drinking the blue pierre polyester organ juice! hahahahaha and punch yourself in the crotch.
I really got to you didn't I?
Seems common sense to the rest of the world that this was a fantastic day for the people of Venezuela.. they got freed from a dictator, sorry you can't wrap your head around the fact that Trump had a positive net impact on something but it's just the truth.
As for the Carney not getting a deal done with the US.. yeah I'm not putting this ALL on him, his padawan Trudeau also couldn't negotiate his way out of a wet paper bag so there's that. Too worried about the environment and too focused on taxing us all to death I guess.
And as for former US president's blocking KXL yeah fair enough, Sleepy Joe was useless. But Trump wanted this done since his first term. Lots of blame to go around. My point stands though.. not getting it built is an ongoing colossal failure for Canada and Alberta.
Also, thank you to those with more knowledge than me on the difference between Alberta's oil and that of Venezuela, I was asking for clarification because I keep hearing mixed answers about whether the refineries in the US are even capable of handling raw Venezuelan crude right out of the gate. Interesting stuff that will become very important to pay attention to going forward..
Can't remember the other points everyone is throwing rocks at me for but yeah I appreciate (most) of the discourse guys. If you haven't already... look up all the videos of Venezuelans celebrating around the world today. This is a good thing, yes things will have to be stabilized to ensure it stays this way but just enjoy the moment if you can, I know I am.

The issue isn't Maduro or the quality of the oil, the issue is the massively increased chance Venezuela falls into a civil war which is what most that know more than us are predicting, Venezuela hasn't been freed from a dictator, they just exchanged one for another
You need to realize this is a region dominated for decades by left wing extremists, FARC and the Shinning Path are literally next door, there isn't any likely end to this but a long bloody war

So what's going on? It sounds like Maduro was removed but they don't actually plan a regime change and they are just going to go in and start exporting (stealing) Venezuela's oil.
Is that pretty much the gist of it?
Pretty much; you're just missing the part where it's all Trudeau's fault.

The Shining Path is Peru based. Are you thinking ELN? We deal with all three being in the region and I can tell you the ELB on the western border there has created a lot of issues. Their alignment with the Venezuelan government could cause significant disruptions to infrastructure. The US is going to need to assist a lot of capital into redeveloping a lot of the transportation and midstream infrastructure on the region and subsequently ensure its security which is extremely difficult given the geography.

Why are people excited? The vice president is now acting president. It’s the same government as before.
Happy for Venezuelans who are happy, they know more about the country than myself, but doesn’t seem like much has changed except that the leader is gone but was replaced with someone else with the same ideals.
How many times do we need to see the US remove a bad leader of a foreign country only to replace them with someone even worse than the one that was removed, where this new leader not only treats the citizens worse, but also proceeds to sell out their country by auctioning off whatever America tells them to auction off?
The government that remains will need to find a way to come out on top over the coming weeks to keep Venezuela for Venezuelans and somehow defeat the various US proxies in the country that will try to finish the job to allow for the new leadership group to enter. There's always a chance I guess, and Vietnam happened after all, but I'm not hopeful.

No not difficult, impossible, there is no appetite for the tens of thousands of US losses trying to hold any territory there would bring, and I know Shinning Path is Peru based but they wont stay there, US boots on the ground would be a irresistible draw to every left wing outfit from Nicaragua to Chile

I think what many people are saying is that two things can be true at once.
Maduro is a thug and shouldn’t be leader of any country and that what Trump just did is highly destabilizing, the end game is completely unlcear, he’s provided lots of air cover for other nation states to undertake regime changes and that it’s likely the US now tries to exploit this poor country after all they’ve been through.
It remains to be seen if this is a positive for Venezuela, the US track record is pretty terrible on this front.

Just in case anyone is interested, oil is up by about $0.50 at this point. Apparently not super concerned about a flood of Venezuelan oil production anytime soon.
Trump now directly threatening Columbia, Mexico and stating the following:
“We are in the business of having countries around us that are viable and successful and where the oil is allowed to freely come out,” Trump said, adding, “It gets the prices down. That’s good for our country.”
He’s also reiterating his demand for Greenland. He is unshackled and unrestrained, anyone still think this is about helping Venezuelans?
I don't support it as the athletes have nothing to do with their leaders actions, but I wonder if this impacts the US involvement in the Olympics or if the governing body of tennis will black out the US flag for American players going forward given this attack on a sovereign country that has also killed Venezuelan civilians.
This is a good thing, yes things will have to be stabilized to ensure it stays this way but just enjoy the moment if you can, I know I am.
It’s nice that you’re enjoying the moment but people who have read a history book in their lives probably have a different perspective on whether this is a moment to celebrate it not.

The IOC is about money and US media contracts and sponsors pay the most. So it won't impact US involvement in the olympics

Those expats were a big chunk of the educated, skilled workforce. More than half of the doctors left the country, three-quarters of the employees of the state-owned oil company, 200k teachers, and 75k engineers. According to one study, 90 per cent of the 1.5 million Venezuelans who left the country between 1999 and 2014 had a university degree.
This isn’t to excuse or justify the actions of Trump’s administration. But the makeup of Venezuela’s expat community goes a long way to explaining the catastrophe of the Chavez-Maduro regime. It was extraordinarily unpopular, especially with the kind of skilled and educated citizens necessary to make a modern economy run.
Yeah, definitely. But that's kind of my point. A highly educated diaspora that has been out of the country for decades isn't representative at all of how the people living in the country are going to feel about this kind of thing.
A Venezuelan expat living safely in North America or Europe who left the country due to the Bolivarian regime is going to generally be much more supportive of outside military action that removes the government from power than people who actually have to live through the realities and the repercussions of that.
And like most things with Trump, it seems like celebrations were probably a bit premature. The administration seems to be signalling that they don't care who is in power or about any kind of democratic reforms as long as the Venezuelan government gives the US what they want.
