Maduro was a horrible leader. But this isn’t the way to go about regime change.
What’s Trump going to say if China decides Taiwan needs a regime change? He’s got not moral authority to oppose it now.
It’s also bad news for Canada. Based on Trump’s comments the U.S. will be taking any oil or minerals they want. No need to buy them when you can just take what you need. Although I’m not sure he fully understands how long it will take to get those resources flowing.
As for the Venezuelan people, we’ll see. Some money will need to flow to them or there’s going to be hell to pay in the long run.
Man, sometimes I forget how Liberal most of CP really is (at least in the off-topic forum), this has been quite the refresher.
Venezuelan people partying in the streets around the world. Even over here in Europe I ran into a family on vacation and they were celebrating, but the left hates Trump so much they can't accept it. Carry on I guess.
Bigger "issue" I see here is the repercussions of the US gaining access to the largest raw minerals market on the planet, Venezuela has the largest oil and gold deposits on earth I believe, and now the US has even more reason to reduce their reliance on Canada going forward. THATS the issue for us.
Carney couldn't get a deal done with the US to ensure our economic future, and the US pivoted - while also freeing the people of Venezuela from a dictator. All in all, great day for the US and the people of Venezuela, and as for Canada.. we lose again.
Someone with better knowledge of oil and gas can explain this much better than I can... but I believe the "type" of oil that they extract in Venezuela is different than what we have here in Alberta, and so US refineries are still setup to convert Canadian oil for now? But after a few years, that wont be a problem. Also I believe Russian and Venezuelan oil are essentially the same "type", any oil gurus out there care to explain the implications better?
Regardless, Keystone not getting built a decade ago is such a colossal failure.
A lot of Venezuelans are under the impression that this move will guarantee them free elections.
Personally, I'm not sure that's the Republican plan. Trump keeps referring to putting his own people and big business in charge. Kidnapping the leader also doesn't seem like the most effective way to ensure a free election. I do want freedom for Venezuelans. The question is will Trump's actions accomplish that goal? Is that even Trump's goal?

I may be completely off the mark, but I think part of the reason he wants this is so the tech bros can build more “Freedom Cities” like Prospera ZEDE in Honduras. That’s part of the motive behind the desire for Greenland too.
Those expats were a big chunk of the educated, skilled workforce. More than half of the doctors left the country, three-quarters of the employees of the state-owned oil company, 200k teachers, and 75k engineers. According to one study, 90 per cent of the 1.5 million Venezuelans who left the country between 1999 and 2014 had a university degree.
This isn’t to excuse or justify the actions of Trump’s administration. But the makeup of Venezuela’s expat community goes a long way to explaining the catastrophe of the Chavez-Maduro regime. It was extraordinarily unpopular, especially with the kind of skilled and educated citizens necessary to make a modern economy run.

And am I the only one who doesn’t think Trump has anything to do with this. This was going to be the republican move regardless who was in power. So is Greenland, so is Canada. It doesn’t go away with him. I’m not even thinking of him through this. I’m thinking how ####ed that country and its leadership is, top to bottom.
I agree with the first part but am not sure about the second part. Trump may be the only one with the force of personality to get away with anything and everything. I don't think JD Vance or any other Republican I'm familiar with will inspire any sort of following. Of course of they complete the transition to dictatorship while Trump is alive that won't matter.

Admin officials revealed that Trump is “very interested” in secret plans drawn up last year to send US Special Forces into Mexico. Drone use against the cartel likely
One official even says Trump recently asked for updates on preparations for a possible operation. https://zeteo.com/p/trump-venezuela-...attack-cartels
And Nixon only bombed the Viet Cong in Cambodia, nothing else bad came of that...lies the US tells about their actions.

This is something that I have difficulty wrapping my head around.
Force of personality? Why?
What element of Trump is appealing to anyone for any reason? I dont get that. If you stripped him of all of his privilege and he was just some regular schlub he wouldnt even make Assistant to the Regional Manager at a rural Wal-Mart.

The saving Grace of the US is they lose all interest by around the 5th dead GI, as a country they have never had any stomach for losing troops in any war frankly, as soon as a helo goes down or an IED takes out an MRAP the whole plan grinds to a halt
So what's going on? It sounds like Maduro was removed but they don't actually plan a regime change and they are just going to go in and start exporting (stealing) Venezuela's oil.
Is that pretty much the gist of it?

Supposedly, they'll also rebuild the infrastructure that Maduro destroyed. Venezeula's barrel-per-day capacity has dropped significantly in the last 15 years. They'll probably try to get it back close to where it was.
But otherwise, that's about it. I actually think where Trump says they're going to run the country and the new VP-turned-P says nothing has changed, it's Trump telling the truth and her lying.
So deep breath, Canada produces 5MM BPD
Venezuala currently produces 1MM BPD
Canada has pipeline setup to deliver right to the gulf, with a government here that is fully cooperative.
Who knows who is running the show down there. How much investment is needed, and if they have enough skilled locals to operate above 1MM BPD. Its not about fixed assets, manpower is critical for project and ops.
I am almost wondering how involved the Oil sector was in the USA. Frankly they might be spitting out coffee when they heard this. It may get there but its not lego to pop in and fix in a jiffy on assets and manpower
My guess this goes way of Syria and goes quiet, as most of Trump overhype does
The outlet posted their article on X, and Biden replied to it, writing, 'Trump talks tough on Venezuela, but admires thugs and dictators like Nicolas Maduro.
'As President, I will stand with the Venezuelan people and for democracy.'
