The jets were dumping it in his corner all night. By virtually every metric the team's performance when he's on the ice is the worst of all defensemen this year. I hope it's just a phase that he needs to work through.

The lack of a training camp certainly factors in here.
He always was one of the fittest guys coming into camp. Obviously this was a much different offseason so who knows if he had his full training routine and how that played out for fitness testing this year.
But that combined with no ability to shake off game rust. He's battling through it.
And he's used to Brodie as a full time guy so now with Andersson, who certainly plays a lot different style and positionally than Brodie, so it's and adjustment. In the past, he knew where Brodie would be, now, Andersson isn't in the same positioning so it means Gio has to make up the space difference (ie skate more).
If he can hold the fort down these next two weeks I think he'll be just fine.

Game Takes: Flames 4 Jets 3 (SO)
- Gaudreau continues his streak
- Gaudreau and Monahan stone cold in the shoot out
- Markstrom solid
- Fortress pairing continues to blank opposition

I wonder if the chemistry between Tkachuk and Backlund could bring them both back. Would also be a shame to deal Bennett without giving him a proper shot with 13 and 23, like say the next 8 games atleast. I could see Bennett wanting to stay if that was his spot, feel like the request was more so just a cry out for opportunity.

Do you mean upgrade the organization by trading an asset that will be able to go anywhere he wants to in a year and a half....and likely will?...with zero compensation?
Yep....you got me!

You know, with all of these fans of the Jets, and Leafs and Oilers crying that the Flames area a dirty team, well, I'm actually ok with it.
For too long this team played with no edge, we were the team that was fun to play against, we were the good sports for the league, the poster boys for the sportsmanship award.
We sat there and took it when bigger teams like the Jets and Oilers would run all over us.
Be dirty boys be dirty, establish that we're un shaven long haired barbarians.
When the other teams play the Flames their pregame speeches shouldn't be about winning, or establishing their game, it should be holy crap I hope we make it out alive.

Considering 30-40% of your posts are bitching about Johnny, i'm pretty sure it's you got us.....
The Flames are royally effed if Gaudreau ever leaves. Remove your hate blinders and he is a top 10 player in the league.

Exactly, I want that team who has the mentality that we might not be able to beat you this game, but we are certainly going to beat you up!

Lots of complaining about Backlund, but I thought he was good. The only thing he did tonight that wasn't so good was miss the net on a few shots, but otherwise I thought he looked good, and it seems he is getting better every game. Hellebuyck is a pretty good goalie positionally usually, so I assume that Backlund was trying to pick a corner.
As Cali has mentioned earlier, Monahan is deserving of a tonne of praise. He is playing as a very solid 1st line centre at both ends of the ice. Gaudreau as well seems committed to defence, and I really think that it helps to get buy-in from the rest of the team when they see those two hustling back and breaking-up plays. It not only helps the Flames more when they are on the ice, but there is the trickle-down effect of forcing everyone to put in that effort.
I thought Bennett was great, as was Mangiapane. Tkachuk and Lindholm had their moments too. The Hanifin - Tanev pairing is just rock-solid out there. You have to give credit to Tanev, but everyone has forgotten already how Hanifin - Hamonic were really solid to start when they were first put together under Peters, and the talk was how the Flames had "2 first pairing pairings". Hamonic somehow regressed, and that pairing often became disastrous (especially in the playoffs later that season). I don't think Tanev is going to be that - he is much calmer with the puck, and just seems to have much more awareness around him than Hamonic did. I also think that Hanifin is maturing and MUCH better defensively now too. I would bet that this pairing continues to be the nearly flawless minute-munchers that this team needs since Giordano-Brodie stopped being the league's most dominant pairing.
Markstrom was everything you could ask for tonight.
One quibble - I think it should be a rule that you start Gaudreau-Monahan-Giordano in OT. I am assuming it was Ward trying to line-match, but Monahan and Gaudreau were playing so well all night, it doesn't matter who else is out there.
Tomorrow night's game will be interesting. I thought it was already a fairly full-effort game from both sides, but tomorrow should be a bit more emotional too as these teams are building up more of a rivalry.

I hope not, seeing as how the Flames were the road team.

Just my two cents , I say let’s enjoy an exciting win and not talk about recouping organizational assets by trading Gaudreau. The off season is over and he won’t be moved during the year unless the wheels totally come off.

2 of the WPG shoot out attempts were close to stopping and skating backwards- seemed borderline against rules but what do I know.
