Yeah, I don't really agree with the Hamonic criticism either. I know his fancy stats aren't very good but he's been pretty solid to me so far. Tonight he was off, yes, and Gulutzan even said so in his post game press conference. But I don't think it's fair or accurate to call that trade "absolute robbery" for the Islanders.

That was a fun game to be at! Score flattered the Blues in my opinion.

I thought I heard this as well. Super lame display by some of the fans for sure, especially given the nature of those two goals (flukey own goal tip, Tarasenko missile). Johnny also makes mention of it in his post-game scrum and suggests that Lack didn’t deserve the nonsense.
Oh well, these are the same people who inexplicably still boo Phaneuf every time he’s in the building I suppose, almost eight years after he was traded.

I was there and saw the token goalie boo on a long slow trickle shot (it's low hanging fruit). It's a lame thing that always happens at games. Very similar to the "shooot" groan from the crowd when our players are working the puck in the offensive zone for more than 20 seconds. Zero lane, yet the 30% of the building is saying shooot

Jankowski has all the tools, it's amazing how well he's developed and how polished his game has become. Well done to him and also to the Flames management, patience was key with developing him and he hasn't looked out of place since he got to the big club. Gonna be lots of fun watching him this season

Pretty fantastic game to watch.
That Janko-Jagr-Bennett line was awesome. If that line continues to roll, look out. Teams won't be able to just key on the top line.
I thought Lack played well in relief and made a huge stop and the end. Lastly, Kulak has definitely impressed with his play, and his ability to skate out of trouble.
Hopefully they can continue this play away from home because the next 6 are on the road.

Great win. Jankowski is a beauty, just like we’ve been saying for a few years. Kulak was awesome again, in limited time. Hope Smith is all right. Lack scares me. Otherwise, call up Gillies and watch the real young core continue to develop.

I think Lack had no chance on either of the goals he allowed and he made a 5 alarm save to kill the Blues' chances of winning the game.
Lack should definitely start the next game. Smith has been hurt every game for the last 5 or so games. He needs a rest

Lack didn't have a chance on that second goal, no, but it was still frustrating to watch cause we all saw the setup a mile away.

I've heard some criticism of Hamilton for his gaffe but on the whole I thought he was maybe the best player on the ice. In all three zones he was creating things, either breakouts, transition speed or chances on Allen. He seems to be a bit of a slow starter, based on the past couple of years. I'd like to see him swapped in on the first unit PP. Brodie's not bad in the role, but you'd get more value from Dougie there.

The frustration should have been with the D man who threw the puck up the middle 5 seconds after taking the lead. Flames skaters handed the Blues two goals and fans embarrassingly booed Lack.

Yeah, outside of Jankowski, I thought he had the best game for the Flames until that moment. However, it deserves some criticism because you have to know how much time is left in the game and know the situation. Make the safer play at that point of the game with a 1 goal lead.
On another note, I am seeing the Jagr effect take hold of both Jankowski and Bennett. They're starting to remind me of two other players that Jagr played with recently: Barkov and Huberdeau. Jankowski the defensively responsible large center who can score and make plays for his linemates, Bennett the strong forechecking winger who can retrieve pucks, cycle well, make a few passes, and finish plays set up by his linemates. Maybe a light version of both those players, but I think it's possible that this is the breakout year for both those guys if they continue to play with Jagr. His tutelage is second to none, and he obviously gives those guys a LOT of confidence. It honestly reminds me a LOT of what happened in Florida. Take that for what it's worth.

I will admit, when I saw the stat about Jake Allen chasing his 100th win, I got a bit nervous. It seems that Flames are notorious for 'handing out' milestones to opponents.
But, everything worked out at the end.

Tarvis Hamonic is really struggling. Defence is the hardest position to adjust to a new system and partner so usually I give a defenceman 50 games - and I will with Hamonic, too - but the early returns have not been good at all. Kris Russell-esque (non) gap control, frequent rimming to the puck to no one or banging it off the glass to the other team in the neutral zone, and lack of foot speed. I hope he's just on a poor run of form because the early returns are tilting the move for him toward complete robbery by the Islanders.
|
Although I agree that Treliving overpaid in both these cases, with how the team played tonight, you can see his vision for how the team would lwin. Solid D pairings on the ice at all times and a 4th line with some energy and speed.
As you point out with Hamonic, it's really way too soon to draw a conclusion.
