What damage would possibly be done if they just said what was wrong?

I think it would be opposite; if other GMs think that Gio's injury is serious, they will raise the price for any good D-man. Treliving is smart in saying nothing; he should pretend that Gio will be in the line up on Tuesday instead while talking to the other GMs

More depth on the back end make the Flames a very formidable opponent - maybe there was hesitation by another Western conference team in making our back end too strong, but if they thought Gio was out - they might entertain a trade proposal (even to the point of thinking they were taking advantage of our desperation). You never know how this chess game works.

I doubt they are keeping info close to the chest to influence a trade. I would bet it's more likely that Gio has ligament damage in the elbow or wrist and they aren't sure yet if it's just a pull or a tear.

Almost every team has to deal with injuries to key players and the Flames have had pretty good luck with it this season. If Giordano is out, the Flames will certainly miss him but I'm not giving up on the season and I hope the players don't either.

Vancouver is only 3 points ahead and they are missing Bieksa, Edler, Tanev, and Miller. That's 3 of their top 4 defencemen and their starting goalie. In comparison to that, things might not look so bad.

That's a good point. If it's a break, you think they'd know by know the extent. Grrrrrrrrrrr is frustrating not knowing how devastated in supposed to be

What would be OK if if Gio misses for a bit and the Flames go on a bit of run like sometimes happens when a key guy goes down and the others rally. And then Gio comes back before they come back to earth.

I'm just cup half fulling here.

All we know for sure is that the Flames are being very quiet about this likely injury. They have been close to vest about injury announcements for 15 years compared to other teams.
Unfortunately i think the news is bad and serious which is why they are putting it off as long as they can. They likely already have known the outcome for a day. Perhaps they are getting other medical opinions but they know what they have been told is grim.
If Gio was fine or the injury was a game time decision they would have stated that by now.

I was at the game and just saw video of the injury for the first time...

Not sure if this has been speculated to death, but to me it appears to meet all the criteria for the mechanism of an elbow dislocation.

Just for fun, here is some information on such an injury... not that I'm saying he has done this for sure. When the elbow is dislocated it can either go straight back or twist/shift to the side. Going straight back is usually best, as the collateral ligaments simply slide back with the forearm, though they are often stretched or partially torn in the process. If there is any lateral force, however, there is a risk of more severe ligament damage. Regardless, the best case scenario for an elbow dislocation is still 6 weeks.

Hopefully we hear real news soon!

Wow. That definitely hurts but this team has battled all season and it will be interesting to see how Brodie handles this as well, hopefully he steps in on the back end and leads this team like Gio has been.

Wonder who gets to play. Hopefully it's Wotherspoon, but I'll be expecting Potter.

I think we'll get through this.

If any Flames team since '04 gives me confidence in their ability to get through losing a key player, it's this one.

If Potter ends up starting tonight, would be the first time that I can ever recall the Flames having 4 right handed defenceman playing in a game.

If Winnipeg can win while missing 4 defensemen, we can win by missing Gio. Everyone needs to step up a little harder.

Plus the whole win one for the Gipper stuff.

Gio is much greater then 4 other defencemen.

But with that said I remember the days Iggy would go down, the team would rally, I expect no less today.

Let's see if Brodie can step it up and show us he if could be a legit #1 NHL defenceman. Right now, I see him as a solid #2, fantastic #3.
