I have always looked at Lazar and Horvat as similar players and pretty comparable.
It seems that Lazar may be progressing more than Horvat at this point, but it is of course, far too early to know anything definitively.
My only point here is that they are interesting comparables, much like Shinkaruk and Poirier.

Wasn't he not signed in Vancouver because he was a problem there?

I think Willie wasn't signed in Vancouver because he spent around a year recovering from bad concussion symptoms and the organization was leery about offering term on a player that could have been damaged goods.
Prior to that concussion he was being talked about potentially being captain in Vancouver.

As others have alluded to, his string of concussion issues made him expendable. At the time IIRC, there was some discussion on who to keep between he and Bieksa as both I think were up for renewal. Mitchell lost out because of injury.
I've always thought he was a solid player and a good leader type even in his Canuck days.
He will definitely be a positive leader in FLA.

Minor trade
#FlaPanthers acquire F @Andyogs and D Steven Kampfer from @NYRangers in exchange for F Joey Crabb.

“@BroadStBull: Nothing official yet, but it appears ex-#Flyers winger Simon Gagne will make Bruins' roster and face his old team Wed.”

That's good to hear. I always liked Gagne and felt bad that his career took such a nose dive.

Cam Barker released from tryout contract with Rockford Ice Hogs. Ouch.

He had a specific problem with a few of the core players, Kesler for sure. They fought in practice more than once. The team picked Kesler or Mitchell. They also didn't sign back with Vancouver because they thought he was done as a effective player with his injuries.

I always thought Barker would have a longer, better career than he had...

You and me both. On the bright side at least he's not an Oiler anymore. Poor ####### hit rock bottom 3 years ago.
Maybe he'll end up back in the KHL this season.
