The team with no enforcer can try to hurt them on the scoreboard... if they even get penalized, but they are risking losing guys to injury and god forbid a guy like Pinizzotto or Nurse tries to fight McGrattan to answer for a smaller teammate getting leveled. I love seeing grats win but that just isn't even fair... it could be curtains on the season for either of those two.

? When did this failed experiment occur? I think you're making it up

I can see this being a really successful strategy when every team in the west realizes that intimidating them physically will result in little to no pushback.

Lol, nice way of saying that. After Eager got concussed a couple years ago they tried to use a middleweight, Mike Brown for quite a while and teams ran around on them. It kind of culminated in the preseason last year as this article describes - along with the results - after this they went out and got Gadzic:

Fighting, the NHL’s neanderthal ‘Code’, and vigilante justice have long been anathema to me, but there’s little question that heavier, tougher teams lean on the Oilers, or cheap-shot them with impunity. They have for years.
Early in training camp, Eakins indicated he was not inclined to dress a “gunslinger,” a pure tough guy, heavyweight or not. He has to be able to play the game, contribute useful minutes on the ice, first, was Eakins position.
|
From 07-10 they used a platoon of Stortini, Jacques and Ethan Moreau and they got bullied badly by the Derek Boogards of the league. This is from 2009/10 when they decided to go with an energy player/middleweight instead of carrying a heavyweight (that's the nicest description I'll ever make of Zach Stortini).

I can think of tonnes of other incidents, Taylor Hall having to step up and fight Derek Dorsett and screwing up his leg etc. They had MacIntyre on and off but really tried the team toughness approach for quite a few years and failed pretty badly at protecting their younger players from injury.

Jeff Skinner left a preseason game with an upper body injury.
Could be McDavid for the Canes with J. Staal already out.

I cant remember what season but if I recall correctly bougard single handedly derailed the oilers season in a couple games when they weren't dressing an enforcer

Tough week for Buffalo fans...
The Islanders have gotten significantly better and the Hurricanes could be completely imploding.

2013 third rounder Anthony Duclair has apparently made the Rangers opening night roster out of camp.
Kevin Dubé @KDubeJDQ
Confirmé par son agent : Anthony Duclair débutera la saison avec les #Rangers. Aucune garantie qu'il passera la saison à NYC toutefois.
Corey Pronman @coreypronman
LRT in English: Duclair made the Rangers, good chance it's just a trial.

I believe the Rangers need to ship a contract out if Duclair plays more than 10 games.

yeah, I think so. Doubt he'll stick for the season, but it's still impressive that he made the cut one year after being a 3rd rounder

Looks like the Leafs are getting rid of their tough guys:
“@mirtle: Early indications from @jonasTSN1050 and others are Leafs cuts include Orr, McLaren, Holzer and Nylander. Which would be exactly right.”

WHAT?!?!?!?!11?! I thought Nylander was like the 4th best prospect in the world. I'm sure there's some sort of mistake here....

“@TSNBobMcKenzie: The expectation is TOR's William Nylander will be reassigned to SWE but that has not yet been finalized.”

There is a difference in dressing a fighter like MacGratten or Gazdic who can't play hockey well, and dressing tougher skilled guys which is what I was saying.
Not that they do either though so lets not get ahead of ourselves.

Big Ern actually skates and shoots pretty good for a goon. He shocks me sometimes.

He's a bad hockey player. If you want to compare him to John Scott or something like that then yes, he is better than that. But in terms of NHL skill, he's on the very low end of scale.

I see him as towards the upper of the enforcer type. Which really doesn't mean a lot.
