Meh, I hardly call that taking shots at her. Mothers are controlling an do advise on life decisions. Don't see anything offensive in this thread.
I agree, I'm arguing that it's their right to do that. Perhaps we agree on different definitions of "taking shots", but there was a lot of derogatory tone in relation to his mother and her attempts to exercise that right.
I'll agree to disagree at this point as it's counter-productive to the argument at hand, although I can definitely see your point if you find my original post over-dramatic. I just love my mother and it was a bit defensive on her part.

What did people expect his mom to say? "I can't wait for this damn Frozen Four to be over so that Johnny can quit college and move to the other side of the continent?"
Her comments are totally predictable mom comments and anything else would have been bizarre.
She didn't stop him from moving to Dubuque, Iowa when he was 17 years-old, or Boston when he was 18. I doubt she'll be able to do much to keep him from coming to Calgary at 21, especially if his dad is in favour of it.

I'm always a little surprised at how high many people value a degree. If he gets his communications degree, but suffers a hockey career ending injury while at school, he will have an education that means he can get a job getting people coffee and doing photocopying. If he signs a pro contract with the Flames and suffers a career ending injury playing hockey, he'll have a few million dollars to use in the next phase of his life. Which can easily include finishing his degree anyway.
University degrees are a dime a dozen, NHL contracts aren't.
I apologize for the selfish comment and to everyone it offended, I was wrong to say that. I should have worded it that in my opinion it is very inappropriate for her to be making comments in the media on her son's status and seems borderline manipulative. But clearly I can't jump to the conclusion that she's selfish and I'm sorry to offend.
Somebody saying that players actually read this forum....is that true? I find that hard to believe. I feel like as a player you'd try to avoid people like me : ) I'm a STH btw and love each and every flame and am very excited for the future. Off to the game thread....

I know that there have been promises made that he will sign with the Flames....
but does the fact that he promised Northeastern U that he would play for them, and even signed a letter of intent, and then at the last minute he changed his mind and enrolled at BC.... worry anyone, even a little bit?

Being in construction I bet I've had more guys with university degrees on the business end of a shovel than not. Depends on what you want to do with your degree once you get it I guess. I can't count how many poly sci grads I've had.

No. He committed to Northeastern, and switched commitments when the coach he wanted to play for bolted to the NHL. Different situation altogether, he was recruited by that coach and wanted to play for that coach. You don't get recruited into the NHL, you get drafted and thus have less (or no) say in these things.

Wow... everyone who is taking shots at his mother should be so ashamed.
The majority of you care about this guy in so far as he can (hopefully) play for a sports team you support so you can enjoy them winning down the line (myself included), and although I understand that can be a significant investment, if he failed or was taken out and could never play again, there would be a disappointment but no further investment required on your parts.
This is the guys mother, she cares about him pretty much more than anyone else in the world and damn right she's allowed to be worried about his safety and his future, that's what being a parent is.
Calling their character into question over potentially spending another year in college is really insulting.

Unless he goes back for his Senior year and decides to wait until Aug 15 before making a decision.

But again its not the same. He was recruited by that specific coach. That's how recruiting for the NCAA works, coaches recruit hard and sell these kids hard. It happens frequently in other sports (basketball, football) that when a coach leaves a program, players, even ones already at that program, will transfer elsewhere, or committed players will decommit and go elsewhere. It's just part of the process. If that coach for instance had gone to the University of Michigan rather than the NHL, Gaudreau probably goes to the University of Michigan too. He was loyal to the coach who recruited him, not the university itself.
I can see why people are afraid, because it happened with Schultz and others. But those were outliers and not the norm.

My buddy's kid used to play for the Wild and he was always on their message boards (the Dad,not the kid).....used to drive him nuts. You'd be surprised who reads these forums.

Why don't we all Photoshop Gaudreau onto our own grad pictures? His mom can then choose the best one and Johnny can play for the Flames. Problem solved.

I don't know - saying it on the record in an interview is bit more then mom being mom. There definitely seems to be a lot of tension there as far as the decision goes.
The predictable comments would have been something along the lines of "we are all going to sit down as a family and talk it out after the Frozen Four....its a big decision for John" as opposed to flat out saying he should go back and finish etc.

I've read a few posts where i's been written that his Dad is on the other side of the fence and wants him to sign. May I inquire as to where that tidbit of info came from? Not questioning the legitimacy of these posts, just more curious as to when and where they were said by his dad.

And then he can only sign for 2 years, foregoing $900K guaranteed money in the process. He also needs to sign with a team that can give him icetime and has the cap room.

No direct quotes that I know of, but the guy on the radio this morning was laughing at the suggestion he wouldn't sign because his mom doesn't want him to, and said that his dad is the opposite. The link is in this thread, somewhere (or on the Fan 960 website).
