I am amazed so many people are in favour of this. Am I watching the same Matt Stajan as you guys? The player who hasn't even scored 30 goals yet in his 250 games played as a Calgary Flame? Or the guy who hasn't hit double digit totals in goals?
He plays like a whiney brat. Get kicked out of the faceoff circle? (which happens all the damn time with Stajan) Whine your ass off to the refs about it. Take a penalty? Skate around for 30 seconds having a cry before going to the box.
I think Matt Stajan personifies everything that has been wrong with this team for the last 5 years. No grit, no skill, no finish. Trade him by the deadline while he still has some semblance of value.

Came to post that. I think it's a good sign, I think it means the Flames are trying to lowball him. Either means we get to keep in for cheap, which wouldn't be horrible for a vet presence that knows the organization. Or he doesn't like the deal and we have to move him. Pretty close to a win/win
That said, I'd rather see him gone

Late to the party and very surprised with the news. Really did not think Stajan was a Burke type player. I don't think there is a chance in hell that Burke will run with the same collection of centers for next year. I have to think Backlund will be gone. Probably not durring the year, but i could see him being traded in a package in the summer.

It makes sense to me. You need veterans in a rebuild to take some of the pressure off of younger players and it's not like the Flames are going to be a prime destination for veteran UFAs over the next few years. If you have a guy who wants to play there, is good in the community, and will sign for cheap you might as well sign him; it's not like they'd be forgoing a bunch of assets by not trading him at the deadline.
Look at the kind of contracts the Oilers have had to give out in an attempt to attract veterans to their team. The Flames will be in the same situation over the near future if they let everyone walk.

I see this as a message for a few reasons.
Burke has to restablish value on this player as I dont believe any team in the league is interested in Stajans services.
Stajan doesn't help or hurt as he's just anothr player on a bad team
Players in the system wanting to be here have to take notice here about what is to be expected and if Burke is willing for whatever reason to do this.
I see this backfiring on Burke as Stajan is as wildly inconsistent and this makes Burke look foolish and desperate.
I dont hate Stajan but dont think he deserves to be here either.

Like Rhettro says, you still have to ice an NHL team. I like Stajan for the room and in the meantime (while we're rebuilding) he can play in any situation. Maybe not play to the expectations of some fans, but he's a legitimate NHLer.

Burke mentioned at one point that if a team is struggling/rebuilding, it had better play an up-tempo style of hockey to provide some entertainment value, and be very active in the community.
Stajan and his spouse have been very active in the community. He is respected in the dressing room and plays whatever position that is asked. He is not worth much in a trade, and is no worse than anyone the Flames might be able to sign as a free-agent to replace him. And no, none of our prospects can replace him right now.
His +/- is bad but that is hardly a surprise, he gets hard minutes on a bad team.
I don't mind this. Plus the Flames have oodles of cap space, in fact hitting the floor is likely more of an issue at this point.

Not much to look forward to these days as a Flames fan, but I was looking forward to seeing the back of Stajan. No idea why he would be brought back. I know the Flames are short at centre, but I don't see Stajan as a short-term fix based on his play this year and he is definitely not a long term one... just don't see the point.

It most likely means they're waiting until the team is back in town tomorrow to get all the paperwork finished but all the numbers are likely agreed upon. He's not going to say anything definitive until the papers are actually signed, but I'm sure a guy like Friedman isn't reporting this unless the deal is done.
It's also possible they were waiting to get back to the hotel to get it signed and it will be announced prior to puck drop tonight.

Like most of the rational folks posting in this thread, looking for term and $$$ before judging one way or the other... agree that we need to have some NHLers next year, and I don't have a hate on for Stajan.
Also depends on what other moves are made before the end of the year.

My only beef with him is that he is all that's left of The Dion. I did not like The Dion, but he could have fetched a much better return.
Otherwise Stajan is a typical 3 line C. Not sure what he does to illicit so much contempt.

29 goals, 76 assists in 248 games as a Flame. -16 over that period.
How much did he make? I think he owes us money haha.
I don't want him on the Flames. But if we have to keep him his contract better be less than Backlunds. I'm thinking 2 years at 1.2 per. Or one year and deal him at the deadline next season

Bottom line is we needed to sign a couple of our UFAs because a Lineup of
Bouma - Monahan - Sven
Glencross -Backlund - Hudler
Gaudreau - Colborne - Poirier
McGrattan - Street - Westgarth
Gio - Brodie
Wideman - Russell
SOB - Butler
Ramo
Ortio
will not be anywhere near the cap floor, sure we can go after UFAs that hit the market but the good ones are going to be looking for long term + big $ figures
With Stajan we can probably get a 3 year deal at the same price which is likely the best option for us at this point in time.
Ontop of all that, Stajan would probably fetch the least at the deadline out of Cammy, Stempniak and himself, so to me this is almost necessary.

It's his wife. And the way they have thrown themselves into the community is a great thing. They have gone out of their way to try and do good in the city and make Calgary home. By all accounts they are quality people.
I for one have no issue with people like that on our team and in our community. Especially when the players gives just as much on the ice as he does off.

I can see some of the logic in keeping him but really this is what it has come to? It settles in more and more as the season goes along and you grasp just how long and how bad this rebuild is going to be.
Geeeeeeeeeeeezzz!
