Or, you know, maybe he's just a nice guy? Some comments are starting to remind me of recent oiler fan comments to Scrivens' wife.

Bit of overreaction, no?
Flames are better with Stajan in the lineup. He shelters our younger guys which I'm sure has been mentioned. He was a guy I figured held more value to us than on the market and in that scenario it makes sense to hold onto him.

IIRC, after the flood in June, the Stajans came back to Calgary early to help out with the clean-up and his wife has been one of the most active members of the "Better Halves" ever since he was traded here.

The one thing that made this year bearable was knowing that dead weight like Stajan and Butler would soon be gone. Now Stajan is staying? This is just another kick in the nuts to Calgary hockey fans. Shows Burke is all talk when it comes to building that team of his. Is Matt Stajan big? Nope. Plays smaller than his stature actually. Is Matt Stajan a high skill player? Nope. Below average skill set across the board? Is Matt Stajan truculent? Nope. Butlery soft. I have no idea why Burke would want to resign this guy. He doesn't have any check marks next to any of the qualities Burke said he was intent on collecting for this team. Brutal decision.

Yep, gotta agree with some others....if he has been identified as a good leader for the kids that will be coming AND he wants to be here then I am on board with this move.
Have to have some vets to teach the kids so we don't end up with a team full of grease spots.....hehe.

I agree in that I have been waiting for the day Stajan and Butler would no longer be on this team.
But if this is a 1-2 year contract it won't go against Burkes mandate and I can tolerate it.
Backlund and Monahan are our best centers and Colborne looks to be better suited for the wing... Probably not a good idea to go into next season with Backlund and Monahan as our only experienced centers.
I would love to trade Stajan, Stempniak, Cammalleri and Butler but the truth is only Cammalleri and Stempniak have value in a trade.
Stajan taking hard minutes and letting the young centers develop is better for the team in the long run.
However, if this is a 3+ year deal I will be livid..

Oh no, we signed a player! He doesn't exactly fit the description the manager gave of what he's looking for on whole, so let's all panic and say he's lying.
We all knew we were going to have to bring I some vets next year one way or another. One, we need to hit the floor, two we don't have that many NhL caliber prospects and we need to ice a team, and three we need to create competition for roster spots for our young guys to succeed.
This move actually ups my confidence in Burke because it shows he is properly identifying areas where we should bring in vets. All our good NHL prospects at center are already n the NHL. All of our other forward prospects knocking at the door are playing wing on the farm. Much rather see Stajan eating ice time next year than have journeyman Street being a full time player, and I'm much happier Burke had the sense to see some the vets that should not be brought back are on the wing so we can make some room for the likes of Knight.

I would be fine with him getting signed. I think the guy has great work ethic plays a good checking game and he's the kind of guy that you want in the room. He's had a nice career resurgence and while he'll never be that high end driving the offense kind of guy, he's a guy that can do the little things right.
Plus with the floor going up he's not a bad guy to hold onto .

Not a fan of resigning him unless it's extremely cheap. He shouldn't be taking center time away from the kids who are pushing for those spots.
Also, its very noble he (and his wife) are great in the community. But in terms of why he is on this team, that is absolutely secondary to his on-ice performance. I loved Iggy and how good he was the community, but more than anything he was paid $7 mil/season to deliver on the ice, and when it comes down to it, that's what matters most in the hockey world. Most Hockey fans would agree.

That leaves 1-2 UFA's left to sign. I know some people don't like Stajan and feel they have to do the hand wringing song and dance where they go on and on about him not being this or him not being that, but it's ok to chill. Stajan is a solid 3rd line center, and you're not likely going to pick up a measurably better 3rd line center through free agency.
Personally, I'm good with it. I don't really care for him much, but he's good for that role. If it's keeping Stajan or getting a 2nd or 3rd rounder that we hope to be as good as Stajan in 4-5 years, then Stajan is fine with me.

Mixed feelings overall, but there has to be some vets around.
With respect to the potential impact on Backlund: I like Backlund and think he will continue to develop into a very good hockey player. But I don't see how he fits into the team's plans long term. I see the future of the C position as:
top 6: Monahan and someone drafted this summer or next
bot 6: two of Knight, Colborne, Reinhart or Arnold.
Mix in wildcards of Jankowski or Granlund surprising, along with potential trades and UFAs.
Wherever I look, I see others as better fits for every potential role going forward than Backlund. As much as I like him as a player, I think his role will be to be an asset that brings back another key piece.

Which centres are pushing for spots? Bi can't think of a single center who's ice time is limited by Stajan. Plus, if you can earn your spot when Stajan is around, what does that say?

As for price, for me the key number is 12 - as long as the total value is under $12M it will probably be okay. And in that vein, at least one of the numbers has to be less than 4 (hopefully both are). Under 4 years or under $4m. (again, preferably both under, but realistically, one is fine)
