Y on the 360 is the "start a fight" function if you're not near the boards.
Personally, I just avoid using the button period. I'm a power forward, so board work doesn't really pop itself as an option much (and running the player over because of some sort of magical stickwork allows me to get the puck anyways).

Retirement age depends on a lot of things. Strange that Iginla would retire, did you win the Stanley Cup?
I remember that the NHL series on PC used to give reasons for the player's retirement, such as "Career Fulfilled" (combination of winning the cup and age) or "Reduced production" (age, usually higher than 'Career fulfilled' age).
In NHL '10, it took Scott Neidermayer being rated 76 and a free-agent for a full season before finally retiring. I used to pick him up on the cheap at every trade deadline to bolster the back-end on my AHL roster (so I had a good defenseman and I wasn't giving XP points to players I didn't have signed to a contract).

I was up late last night and fired up my Xbox, I'm playing my first season of BAP and I'm a defenseman playing for the Hitman in my draft year.
I was in game 7 of my Eastern Conference finals playing against Red Deer.
Probably the best most all absorbing game of video hockey that I've ever played.
It felt like a playoff game where both goalies played really well. Both teams were hitting all over the ice. There were big defensive plays and massive amounts of hits.
Jared Cowen kept going after my guy after the whistle, he'd been doing it throughout the playoffs and in every regular season game, where he'd go after me after the whistles, and we'd leveled each other with huge hits all year.
The game was 1 to 1 after 2 periods with each team having about 25 shots, you could literally feel real life tension as I didn't want to lose and end a good playoff run.
The crowd was really vocal cheering each hit. Nugent-Hopkins got a break away during a bad line change by the Hitman, and you literally heard a person in crowd scream as he rang the shot of off the post.
With 5 minutes left we got the powerplay, and one of our forwards scored during a massive goal mouth scramble.
3 minutes later after some big saves by my goalie, we scored an empty net goal to put things away. the with 30 seconds left and the goalie out again, Red Deer scored to close the gap to 3-2. They got a huge chance with seconds left in the game and our goalie dove into a scrum to smother the puck and seal the win sending us to the WHL finals against Tri-City.
So what's the point of this thread?
This was the first time where I felt that EA had gotten the game right, I mentioned that I thought that this was a very strong game before. But this was the first time that I felt some of the emotions that should be tied to a playoff game.
It was fun, there was tension, it had everything, and no "Come the frack on" game play moments.
It was great, and I didn't need to score 5 goals and lay out 30 hits to enjoy it. Much to the dismay of my agent, my defense man who had been an offensive catalyst and hitting machine through the playoffs registered no points, 3 shots was a plus 2 5 hits and 7 minutes in penalties.
I think EA deserves a well done for that.

I agree, I was playing Be a GM mode with my buddy, we both created players and put them on a team and just played with our guys the whole time (pretty much 2 player be a pro) and we were in game 7 of the Cup finals against Columbus. We scored with a minute left to make it 2-1 and after that it got really tense. They scored with ~30 seconds left because we were both cherry picking and wanted the empty netter. This game is a lot better than any of the previous instalments in the emotional aspect.

Back in the days of 2000 and 2001, I used to pick up Joe Sakic and put him on the 4th line...just for the sake of having Joe Sakic on my team. It was amazing having a Fleury/Sakic/Naslund 4th line (all ~40 years old too!).

I have to admit, the game would feel like that for me if I didn't have a grinder's mentality while playing. At ~20 minutes a night, I keep ending up with 15-20 shots per game (I just throw it on net unless there's an obvious passing lane with better options)..and the coach NEVER complains I'm not making use of team makes because I'm hitting hard and constantly blocking point shots.

Two freezes now after penalties. One when showing the guy in the box, and the after after a game misconduct and the guy walking down towards the room. Both in Be A GM.

Aw frack I got drafted by the Oilers.
Went to camp and was intentionally horrible, now I'm back with the hitmen.

a few beefs with this game:
1)Goaltender interference is stupid. It seems you only get called if you score a goal. if I know I bumped a goalie I now try and kill 10 seconds before shooting again so I don't not only a)have a disallowed goal but b)get a penalty for it.
I wish they had it like the NHL where there is incidental contact, no goal...but no penalty.
2)the "dead spot" in the net. Just inside each post there is this little dead spot. Instead of going in the net for a goal like it should, it just falls flat and sits on the goal line. This existed in NHL 11 as well, it seems to happen every few games and drives me bonkers.
3)Not a huge deal since the game is I'm sure 95% completed by the time the Stanley Cup is handed out the year before, but I had to laugh at the commentators talking about Tim Thomas and how "one year, he'll most likely get his name on the cup" came up.

Man the game this year is bugged, especially HUT. I think the game play is better, but overall much less smooth than 11. I'm really hoping they patch or fix it somehow, I'm enjoying it less and less.

The passing is really pissing me off. The AI positional play has been marginally better, but the passing is atrocious. Letang is looking at 3 Pen forwards and I directly pass to them and he ends up passing the puck left 10 feet and it ends up icing the puck.
Not to mention I have to "charge" up every pass which means I get the puck stolen WAY more than I used to.

My only glaring complaint still is how some guys can walk through 4 or 5 guys, each stick poking and checking and he never loses the puck.
Then there's some guys who can barely keep it on their sticks against 1 defender. I realize it's probably a combination of agility, puck control stats etc, but it's a bit ridiculous.
So guys will just come in, curl back to the blueline, curl back and then drive to the net. Your defencemen ALWAYS bite, can't get the puck away and they get a good chance. The AI on defence stinks.

Yes that's another thing I've noticed is the defence is terrible.

the lack of puck control physics allows for the "figure skating" that ruins the game, especially online. until they add that element to the core of the game play, adjusting the default tuner effects of puck control (decreasing it), and increasing the effect of poke check/stick lift is required in a tuner asap.
the game rewards figure skating to create offense rather than passing.

Also, the latest (or 2nd last) tuner set completely made the hip-check ineffective. When the game came out, the hip-check was broken, everything you touched would get hit, whether the physics made sense or not. But now, you can line up a guy perfectly and he doesn't get affected at all. They take a slight nudge and just move on.

Thought so, I had just discovered it, then it was all of a sudden useless.

They turned it off because people were exploiting it to no end online. They are going to fix it in the title update. It's not a permanent thing.

I agree they needed to tame it down as it was beyond ridiculous online, but to essentially turn it off is lame.

This.
Just hit my first playoff series on BAP, the atmosphere is really well done. Dominated the first 2 games at home only for my entire team besides my player to put up a stinker and lose 5-2 (1g 1a for my guy, nonstop penalties and GA when he wasn't on the ice) on the road, the game actually seems to play different and gets the feel of a play off game perfect. Love how the fans stand up and cheer during the last minutes of the game.

The worst was in the semi finals of the mem cup, after a really long season, and we were up 4-3 three with two minutes left, and I went deep on a forecheck and threw a hit only to see my player crumple to the ice and lay there.
Then the whistle blew and I was carted off the ice and missed the rest of the game, and was told that I was going to miss 4 weeks so I missed the finals and my team lost 7-2.
Man after playing the whole season through that was a pisser.

So I just played a season of WHL Be a pro. I get to March 17, my team is in first place and it just stops. I assume there are/would be playoffs and do I get drafted? How do I get there? Help? Thanks.
