Straight-up, all else equal, as a GM looking for a goalie, I'm taking Saros over Markstrom all day long.

However, all else isn't equal. Considering that he will cost more now, and considering that Saros is going to cost a bundle in a couple years cap-wise, I think Markstrom becomes the easier and better buy. Also, for this year, Markstrom is playing better and is the better goalie - no guarantees what future years look like, but you've at least got the one in the bank. So those factors swing me over to Markstrom.

Still believe (and hope) that someone (likely NJD) makes the move.

I don't see many of these late 1sts and 2nds were likely to acquire breaking the lineup for a few years. As is stands, there's already a major log jam, and the Flames won't be opening up very many roster spots next year, at least not until the deadline. They'll likely rotate prospects in the bottom 6 forward positions, but even getting there means competing for time with Coronato, Pelletier, Hunt, Klapka, etc... it's not a horrible problem to have.

Considering it’ll be a lottery pick, that sounds about right.

For years, Saros had the benefit of playing for defence first teams, his numbers reflect that. This is the first year he has played in front of a more offensively inclined team.

I’d be wary of acquiring him. I feel like there is some system masking going on there.

Markstrom has played in front of all kinds of systems, and had success (and bad years) under all of them. Markstrom seems to play better when he’s getting shelled, though his best statistical season was under Sutter.

I think Markstrom is the better goalie asset to acquire. 3 playoff runs at a discounted price with the ability to play lights out and win you a series.

So, Saros is absurdly priced. MAF is unavailable. Come, get yourself a Markstrom!

IMO Markstrom has had exactly one bad season (last year). His first year here he was fine before his injury and then IMO he came back way too soon and his numbers suffered. Then he became really good again. Wound up with a .904 for the year but I'd discount a large portion of the middle of his work that season. Last season seems to be the outlier to me.

Also, Sutter's style of play didn't jive with Markstrom, and that really got to him mentally. Going long periods of time with no shots to then face a total collapse in front of him was rough. Markstrom is at his best when he's continuously involved in the game. The other teams all know the chaos Sutter was causing and are likely to just disregard numbers from last season.

He was fine the season before. And was incredible against the Stars going long periods with no shots.

I think the more reasonable explanation for last season was baby year. That stuff can mess with your focus and ability to perform at your peak.

If everything is equal I take Markstrom and by everything I mean the age. Markstrom being 34 to Saros being 28 is a big factor. Saros will need a Helleybuck style contract extension this summer or he could walk to free agency where Markstrom has the extra year and will either be too old to keep long term but likely is cheaper on a short term extension.

Agreed I hope the Devils step up but it feels like they might punt on the season and try for a goalie again in the summer.

Plus, Saros is getting a hefty raise (as much as 60%, likely more). Markstrom at 4.5-5.4m, depending on retention (I doubt it would be the full 50%), would make more sense for NJ given their youngsters on the blue line need a raise.

It’s very arbitrary. Their rankings usually account for “most likely to move” along with value. Obviously they are doubtful at this point he is moved.

I’m not so sure; there is still specific teams in need of goaltending and slowly but surely what’s available is no longer, see MAD and Saros. I could see a team circling back to Conroy about Markstrom before the deadline for sure.

It's been discussed a little bit in the Dallas thread but the opportunity to trade Hanifin and Tanev as a d-pair to a contender is one of the most interesting and unique thing's I've ever seen at a trade deadline.

Really I think if I was a contender that was lacking on the backend I would really be trying to somehow make that happen.

Winnipeg:

Morrissey - Demelo
Dillon - Pionk
Samberg - Schmidt

Boston

Grzelcyk-McAvoy
Lindholm - Carlo
Forbort - Shattenkirk

Detroit

Walman-Seider
Chiarot - Petry
Maatta - Gostisbehere

Dallas

Harley - Heiskanen
Lindell - Hakanpaa
Suter - Hanely

Vancouver

Hughes - Hronek
Cole - Myers
Zadorov - Juulsen

Tampa Bay

Hedman - Raddysh
De Haan - Cernak
Lilleberg - Perbix

LA

Doughty - Anderson
Gavrikov - Roy
Englund - Spence

Feel like any of those teams would immediately become elite defensively if they dropped their third pair and replaced them with Hanifin-Tanev.

If I wanted to try to really impact my chances of winning a cup, and was willing the spend premium assets to do it, I actually am not sure there would be a better way this season to do it than to try to acquire both of them together.

I like this in theory but would also be super complex given both players are UFA's after this season.

Never know though, could end up being some crazy complicated deal none of sees coming. That sounds fun to me!

What would that cost even look like?
1st 2024
A prospect
B prospect
Cap dump
Young B roster player
More?

I imagine at that point it would have to include a Hanifin extension

Yeah that'd be a pretty slick (but pricey add).
Boom, here's a solid 3-4 pair that are already have chemistry and comfortable playing with one another. Huge upgrade to your D and makes your depth incredible.
