I remember not wearing jeans for years after a girl made fun of my Toughskins in grade 7.

My dad was so cheap we did all our back to school shopping at Kmart. The crap shoes they sold would fall apart in a matter of months.

"Style" as a kid was whatever our mom found on sale at K-Mart, Zellers, Woolco, Army & Navy, etc.

I agree with the poster who laments the return of baggy jeans on women. Like come on.

Fitted tight jeans are so sexy on women.

Worst was having those taking those crappy, off-brand “Converts” from Saan taken to a shoe repair place, to have a misshaped piece of “leather” patched on to fix a tear.

Quite the rabbit hole...

http://gwgpiecebypiece.ca/en/products/gwgbrands.html

In 1961, GWG was acquired by Levi's, who closed GWG's last manufacturing plant in Canada in 2004. GWG garments continue to be prized by vintage denim enthusiasts

Imagine having a school uniform that consisted of brown pants, a yellow shirt and a green vest...

(Catholic Elementary school in Rural NL in the 70's...yeah the ones run by Nuns...)

On top of that your mom decided that brown corduroy pants are more durable and you are the only one wearing them for years...

Jeans of any style would have been an upgrade...

In his first few years as an Oiler Wayne Gretzky had a sponsorship with GWG. Pro tip: don’t Google search for those images.

My Mom bought one pair of brown corduroy pants, it took me 4 years to out grow those suckers.

Then she discovered GWG plant in Edmonton sometimes sold misfits out the back door.

We were poor as crap as kids but we still wouldn't shop at Army and Navy.

Was all their products left over from WW2 or the Korean war?

Like the first time I went in and went to the Toy dept... it was like stuff you would find in North Korea.

oh do you guys remember the toy guns where you use rocks and pebbles as ammo?

They were great as you had unlimited ammo from the ground. I'm sure many kids lost an eye from them though.

Easily No Fear in the back woods small Alberta city I grew up in. I’d unironically wear one again if I could find them.

I remember those dollar store ones that just had a spring and a release with no safety. I quickly realized that rocks and pebbles were terrible options because they could jam. The best things to use for those were literally pencils and pencil crayons. While there was complete agreement that you never pointed those things loaded with a pencil at anyone, the fact you could shoot pencils 20-30 feet easily was the final reason that got those things permabanned. We moved on to paper wedges after that.

It's possible I missed it by a few years or was just around for the last year or two of it. No Fear was still worn by many, but basically a lot of other stuff was taking over as the majority.
