Yeah, but I think you have to accept that the Flames will have to trade at a discount if he demands out. Kyrou is about as good as I think it will get. Mercer/Bratt + 23 1st from the Devils would be a worthwhile gamble on the pick I think.

If they re-signed Gaudreau I would have been Ok, but also I doubt Tkachuk would be moved.

Exactly, so I think it made sense it was rejected if offered.

I think we will find out pretty soon if the 2nd overall was ever actually on the table

Gaudreau's (at best) dithering or (at worst) gameplaying really f'ed them up.

Yup, Gaudreau really slapped Tre in the nuts on the way out. If Tkachuk goes I will be annoyed but not mad at him as he has been transparent at least.

Exactly, I can't fault either Gaudreau or Tkachuk for leaving when their contracts/RFA status are up, what I can fault Gaudreau for is the way he screwed over the team (intentionally or not, it doesn't matter) on his way out the door.

It's a downgrade (Barzal has stalled out a bit) but will Barzal sign here? And for how much?
I'd rather Bratt or Kyrou.

In a heartbeat. He’s not even a RFA yet and only makes $7 mil. Got a couple year to work out an extension.

He only makes $7M because he is a .8 PPG guy. I think there's a pretty good question about how much ceiling he has.

His numbers suggest he peaked in his rookie year. Maybe it is the Trotz effect?

Playing in a Trotz system definitely affected his numbers. I think Sutter would get the best out of him, the same way he did with Gaudreau especially with their similar skillsets.
Would love a Barzal return personally. Think I also saw somewhere that he grew up a Flames fan.

They are a low scoring team. They lack other star players as well.
Anders Lee and Barzal played a lot together. I’d like to see him with better line mates and different coach. But with no Tkachuk and Johnny we might not have the best line mates unless Lindholm or barzal plays the wing
High end speed so I’d take him

? Barzal has position premium on both of these guys, more consistency at NHL level, and a higher top end than Bratt at least. IMO Bratt is dramatically overexceeding expectations and due to come back down.
I find this a baffling take! I'd want to talk with him about extensions first, but Barzal for Tkachuk is almost a dream in potentially saving the team's future. Lindholm-Barzal as 1-2 centre punch for the next 2 seasons at least.

For years we cry that we are weak at center yet we pass on trading a top winger who is in a contract situation that isn’t looking good and pass on having 2 centers in their mid 20s. One is an elite skater one is an elite 2 way center. Sign me up and hope that some of our prospects can play top 6 wing for us
