But just from looking online, it took the nazis 2 months to seige Kiev in WWII with 500,000 troops and where there was no disregard for any populations.
Why is it surprising that the city has not fallen after a week of fighting when Russian army has not even really done anything remotely as aggressive as the German offensive ? aka shelling/bombing the actual city etc. I read it a lot that “US expected Kiev to fall in days and is now surprised by the Ukrainian troops holding the line”.
|
I don't think you're wrong; there is very little precedent for a city that is as important and large as Kiev is to Ukraine to fall in 48 hours if it has determined defenders. Even Baghdad didn't fall that quickly, and that was at the end of a multi-week air and ground campaign with the Hussein regime in collapse.
And the Russian Army's best forces weren't even deployed into the Kievan front. The 1st Guards Tank Army and the 58th Combined Arms Army started in the East and Crimea respectively.

Archie said she received a call on Tuesday night to inform her a “civilian plane with Russian nationals had landed in Yellowknife” with passengers bound for Resolute, Nunavut as part of “a planned Arctic overland expedition” in a large ATV.
|
Quote:
That expedition is due to begin this fall and visit Yellowknife in January 2023 but the group this week shared to Instagram plans for a “Canadian test drive” beginning in Yellowknife and travelling to Resolute and beyond.
|
Quote:
Among team members listed on the group’s website are Vasily Shakhnovsky, a Russian former oil and gas executive once reported by Forbes to have wealth well in excess of $1 billion, and Vasily Elagin, a Russian mountaineer and explorer.
|
The timing and unannounced change of plans to suddenly schedule a test run given the circumstances seems a bit convenient?

That 40 mile convoy is one of the craziest things in this war. Everyone is talking about it but it's just sort of there. I half wonder if it's a bunch of soldiers on foot with blow-up replicas of equipment like they used prior to D-Day as a distraction. It doesn't seem to be moving any faster than that.

I was wondering today where on earth all the money is going to come from to rebuild Ukraine once this is all over.
Perfect opportunity.
Seize it all. Would be more than enough.

I come to this thread to feel some good ol' CP community spirit. We all agree on everything, including what we'd do with the oligarchs yacht. Nice after arguing about COVID for two years. Sad that its because of this.

Does anyone outside of Russia (or possibly one of Putin's puppet states) support Russia's war in the Ukraine? I'd be curious to see what the rationale is. Putin's line is that Ukraine is not a democracy at all, but some kind of Neo-Nazi state trying to force themselves upon the Ukrainians who yearn for liberation. It's totally non-sensical.
Use of the Nazi rhetoric seems almost like a way to personally attack the Ukrainian president, who is Jewish and lost most of his relatives in the holocaust.

I know some people one the far left and far right who as saying this exact thing. It's bizarre. The one on the far left is basically saying they are both bad, it's just a strange position to take, which is par for the course for him.

Serbia and Bosnia (due to resistance from their Serb entity within the country) officially declared a neutral stance, but it is essentially support for Russia since it maintains normal relations. It's the closest thing to Russian support you're find in Europe outside of Belarus.
They have refused to participate in any sanctions and their state bank has purchased Sberbank branches in the country (not sure how that works, but that it what I read).
The Serbian president did say that they would condemn the invasion on Ukraine if Zelenskyy first goes on television to condemn the NATO bombing of Serbia during the Kosovo War. The EU's special envoy to Serbia has stated they have disqualified their EU application with this stance.
Their rationale to not isolate Russia is due to their historical alliances and support from Russia on the Kosovo issue.

Uh, no, you're not. Sure, maybe nothing will happen, but I'd still GTFO immediately, including by routing through either Uzbekistan or Kyrgyzstan (neither of which should be an issue if you're not leaving the vicinity of the airport).

A lot of this though is for home consumption, a significant amount of Ukrainians joined the Nazi's in the war and so it's a potent dog whistle to get support for older Russians brought up on Soviet history lessons in school, I can remember the hatred my Uncles and grandparents had for the Germans and Japanese as they had all lived through the war, there is a whole generation like me that is to young to have experianced the war but was still none the less influenced heavily by it
