I thought they would come out of the gate and fall flat on their faces, looking absolutely lost like they did last year. To me, they look like they’re all pulling in the same direction. Still too many defensive mistakes, but if we had a true game-breaker, we would be in a playoff spot.

Markstrom has been our game-breaker this year. We need another.

Come to think of it, that's what the team should be called.
The Calgary 'If We Had a's'
All those years, it makes sense now...
The Calgary If We Had A PP
The Calgary If We Had A #1C
The Calgary If We Had A better goalie
The Calgary If We Had A better coach
The Calgary If We Had A new arena

Yeah true, but my point was to illustrate my opinion that the coaching isn’t the main issue.

Fair enough, I highly disagree but that is the cool thing about talking hockey, we all have our opinions and things we see.

Good coaching can certainly help a PP.

It didn't work for Sutter because the roster isn't built for that, we don't have big guys that can stand there and screen the goalie, we have smaller skilled players. It was idiotic to to go back to that well yet Huska did until I think players just tuned him out once Zary and Pospisil came up. Now I see a bunch of guys just doing their own thing out there, no system at all. Like I said, it's fine while young guys develop their craft but you are going to need a guy who actually knows what the hell they are doing once the team is ready to compete. The other thing about Huska is he is soft as warm butter, he doesn't get mad at the officials, he doesn't get mad at the players, he just takes it all. I think he imposed the same system as Sutter while being the nice guy and the players like him but it has become the inmates running the asylum now.

Interesting take. If that's true then we don't want the kids learning to tune out the coach and do their own thing - that would make them EDM.
Agree on the limpness. Especially as relates to the refs, as they have given him lots to scream about this year.
The next three years are a lot more important than the three after that. With so many kids coming up, our coach will establish what kind of team this is and how many of the payers reach their full potential. Not all NHLers are self starters.
If what you say is true about the players tuning him out, then this is probably a multi generational rebuild; as in a lot of the kids we have now and guys we pick the next couple of drafts will be gone before Flames contend again.

Well I am speculating on tuning him out, I certainly don't know that. Look, everybody knows I am not a Ryan Huska fan but as I have said many times I would be overjoyed if he ends up proving me wrong. I think he is a smart guy and he seems like a likeable person, I just don't think he can coach for ####.

Not that Haifin being un noticeable most games is a bad thing, that's his game , quietly doing all the good things good d men do. But this tonight is his flashiest game in a Flames uniform. By a fair Margin.

I really wanted Andrew Brunette after the Devils made him available. He is more of an offensive X's and O's guy who coached Huby to his best season. I thought NJ made a huge mistake in keeping Ruff and not promoting Brunette as the only year they looked good was last year when Brunette ran the offence. I think this year has confirmed that as the Devils have underachieved.

Brunette may be a part of the issue, but the 14 game heater explains most of the difference in the standings. Devs haven't won more than 3 in a row this year.
