I'm home. Just a couple of things in the next few tweets before I finally get my #nap4nenshi:

1. I just returned from an aerial survey of the city. There are some pretty shocking water incursions. Clean-up will
Take a long time.

2. The extent of the power outages downtown mean that it's extremely unlikely that people will be able to work downtown before mid-week.
Naheed Nenshi @nenshi now
3. While there is no boil water advisory, it would be very helpful if you restrict water use. Limit showers, let laundry, dishwasher wait.
Naheed Nenshi @nenshi 23s
3a. But tap water remains safe and clean. No need to stock up on bottled water.

4. If you are home in a non-evacuated area, please stay home. Avoid non-essential travel and straining infrastructure.

Craziest sight I saw today - guy scoops up a live fish that had been flushed *through* the storm drains from the river onto Kensington Road/14th Street and sprints up the 14th street bridge to drop the fish back into the river. Good on ya.
You could practically hear the fish going - "Aww crap, not the raging torrent again. Let me finish my Latte here in Kensington will ya?"

Without an ounce of embellishment, Stanley Park is a lake right now. It isn't even remotely recognizable. You know that hill that goes along the side of 42nd ave down into the park? The TOP of that hill is the river bank. The pool, the ball diamond backstop and the pool building is completely underwater and nowhere to be seen.
Thanks for being the first person to say this (that I've seen). So many questions about exactly how Stampede will go down with all the damage, as opposed to people acknowledging our luck for this not happening during Stampede.
It is not unreasonable to wonder how Stampede is going to happen. The Stampede is not a what if scenario - people have invested a lot into making it happen and are understandably left wondering.
I would not say we are lucky regarding anything to do with the flood. This has been terrible for the region and there will be major fallout for a long time.
The ignorance of some people is astounding west bound Glenmore is closed and roped of and yet people were still driving down it and trying to ford the river under Deerfoot.

Obviously this is terrible for the region but things would be much worse if this happened during Stampede with the grounds full of rides and 10's of thousands of tourists needing assistance and plugging hotel rooms.
A couple panorama's I took from a top the Cranston Ridge earlier tonight.
Facing south as on lookers watch from the ridge above. Calgary Flood by devel_, on Flickr
Facing towards Chapparral Valley and golf course. Autostitch did a crappy job on the water, but still gives a good idea just how much the banks overflowed. Calgary Flood by devel_, on Flickr
Here is one taken the evening before as the water was already rapidly rising. The blue rest stop in this photo is now alone on an island in the above photo. The Beginning by devel_, on Flickr

The southern part of the Alberta-BC border is the Great Divide (where the southwest corner of Alberta is chopped off). All water west of the Great Divide flows west; all water east, flows east. So, any of the rivers in southern BC will empty into the Pacific.
Most of Alberta water flows north to the arctic, north east basically. There is a small amount of our water that does go south, eventually to the gulf of Mexico.
No Alberta water makes it to the Atlantic, depending on if you consider Hudson Bay Atlantic or not.
A few more notes from the boss before sleepy time.

Edit: Not to mention hundreds of rodeo animals.
Much worse if we had a nuclear reactor as well.
I would say that if this happened in the middle of the Stampede and with the Flames in the finals, it might be slightly marginally worse. This is a massive disaster as it is and is pretty much as bad as it gets.
