I once worked behind the counter at a Subway charity day (can’t remember what it’s called) with Bobby Curtola. We sang Fortune Teller and some of his other hits. Subway will always occupy a spot in my heart.

Why in the absolute #### are so many people seemingly terrified to drive over a manhole cover? If you’ve ever swung over the centreline of a road to dodge a manhole cover, you are a complete ####ing moron.

Logically there is no reason to avoid them, those things are heavy as ####. Some of the lightest ones are around 75lbs and the heaviest being over 200. They are pretty damn sturdy.

In over a decade I’ve only ever seen one manhole lid break in half, but I’ve seen a few manhole tops sink ~6” or more into the roadway, making for a pretty damaging impact if you hit it. Overall though I’d guess your more likely to cause an accident by swerving to miss a manhole instead of just driving normally.

There are some I move over for, because the asphalt tends the collapse around them and I don't want to buy new rims. Would I cross the yellow line for it? Ya, if it made sense and didn't impact anyone else. Do I do it for every manhole? Hell no.

I dodge them if they are not flush with the road, but not to the extent that I impact traffic or would cause an accident. I have a steering wheel, why wouldn't I steer around something that will abuse my suspension components?

You guys are getting rim and suspension damage from manholes? That’s ####ing hilarious that you think that’s happening.

Mankind will settle on Mars before we're able to create asphalt that doesn't sink or raise around manhole covers.

I'd have thought you'd just bike over them and use them as some sort of jump.

You’re being a bit of a donkey here bud, if you don’t think this could cause rim or suspension damage I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe tone it down a touch.

Spoiler!

There was a sunken manhole on 9 Avenue SW @ 11 Street near the Staples that was harsh enough to give you a bubble in your tire if you were unfortunate enough to hit it the wrong way while driving the PSL on low-profile tires. It was finally fixed a few years back. [shrug]

I think the main issue Scroop is talking about is the prevalence of vehicles, especially SUVs or others with normal sidewalls, avoiding manhole covers that are essentially flush with the road. I see it allll the time so I’m surprised people are taking this as a comment about avoiding pothole-level road issues.

It’s just very, very silly to watch.

Occasionally I see a reddit post of it happening to people. Doesn't happen to me because I avoid road hazards. Maybe they have better roads in Ontario?

Like, I'd drive over the right side of this, but not the left:

Side note, is this the most manhole'd junction in Calgary?

The roads around manhole covers are always a crapshoot with our weather... so I find it just best practise to avoid them. Obviously if you're weaving around looking like you're warming up your F1 tires, that's one thing, but definitely better safe than sorry.

Yes, that is exactly the one I was thinking of. A couple on crowchild too. Don't need to cross over but I adjust a bit for that one. Its definitely impactful. The whole car jumps around.

That being said, getting annoyed with the new infill service road cutouts that make the roads driveable like wore torn Bosnia/Edmonton. Are there no acceptable standards who does that work where they have to come back and re-tamp if it becomes a jump in a year?

I remember watching Bobby Curtola at Lucifers Nightclub, downstairs from the old Oliver's Old Bailey Restaurant on 7th Avenue. I think Bo Didley and Tina Turner also played there at one time or another.

Yes, you have to use the city approved contractor and there are standards.

No, there is no follow up and it does always end up being garbage.

Too busy driving around setting up pylons to sit by idle “construction zones” that have no hope of seeing workers for the next 1.5 yrs to be fixing stuff.
