There is a type of bird that sounds exactly like a dying smoke alarm and one has recently moved into my immediate area. I am actively hoping nature runs its course and the circle of life is completed on this son of a bitch soon

Have you tried feeding it a 9V battery?

It’s not about budget, it’s a matter of what people value. One of the guys I’m talking about thinks nothing of dropping $250 a day on food and drink. He just ranks hotel quality very low on his vacation priorities. Another one of the guys suggested doing something like a trans-Siberian rail journey for the trip because he’s perfectly fine sleeping in a sleeper berth every night. That’s certainly not my bag. But as I said, plan a trip with a bunch of guys and you’ll soon find out how differently people prioritize this stuff.

Look...I've stayed at some awful places in my life, so I am accustomed.

I stayed in a room in Rome where, n the bed, there were Cigarette ashes on the pillow and, I kid you not, a knife-gouge, with bloodstains, where the occupant's chest would have been.

They graciously agreed to change the bedding and assured me that whomever it was wouldn't be coming back. I stayed there a few days.

I once stayed in a Motel room that someone had been broken into and the door wouldnt lock. I came back from my day at one point and they'd taken the door off entirely for repair. Talk open 'open plan.'

One time I stayed at a place that didn't believe in having a door between the crapper and the bedroom.

I could write a coffee table book about crappy hotel rooms I've stayed in.

Literally, last weekend, I stayed at a Travelodge in Lethbridge and you know what? It had a bed, a TV, coffee maker, fridge, microwave, a little desk even and a clean bathroom. Nothing wrong with it at all. $90/night.

And there was a pub and a liquor store downstairs. What more do you want?? Walking distance to the Japanese Gardens.
I stayed in a hotel in Tena Ecuador near the Amazon. When I turned off the lights, I heard all this scurrying. I turned on the lights to see tons of cockroaches and insects scurry back under the bed. I sleep with the lights on after that.

If I was staying in a place like that I’d make sure the bed legs were all sitting in bowls of a boiling acid or whatever the strongest pesticide available is.

Oh yeah, bugs are...ugh...bugs are bad.

I remember staying at one place where the room had been broken into, so I get there and check in and for whatever reason couldnt open the door.

So I have to go back to the front desk and ask for help because the key wouldnt unlock the door. I didn't think anything of it, that kind of thing happens with key-cards all the time. It was slightly odd because the little light did go green.

Anyways, so I ask the guy at the front desk and he comes with me to the room, and...

"Oh yeah! This room got broken into a while back and they didnt fix the door properly! You gotta put the card in, the handle has to go 'up' instead of the universally known 'down' and then you have to put some body weight into the door to release the lock! Here...see? no problem!"

Am I on a 'murder room' list or something?

But what the hell. I figured...if I can barely even open the door with the key then I'm probably safe.

I stayed in a place in Costa Rica, room was barely big enough for a bed. I shared the room with a massive toad as big as my hand. However mine was the only room that did not have cockroaches.

We had a couple of small lizards controlling the insects in our Costa Rica hotel. Good guests!

I know inflation and all that. But it is bonkers to me to see Mcdonalds new ad campaign based around providing entry level meals starting at $9.99. Also, it doesn't feel like that long ago that subway did their $5 foot long deal every few months which has been replaced with a promo of two 6 inch options at $5.99.

We stayed at the Rimrock for a couple of weeks in 2004. My wife and I had the most spectacular dining experience at the Eden restaurant. The food was magnificent, the service was so good, we felt like we were the only ones there and we were the most important people in the world. It was during the series with the Canucks, and I remember talking briefly to my wife wondering how the game was going. The sommelier returned a few minutes later and whispered discreetly to me that the Flames had just scored.

We still talk all these years later about how wonderful that night was.

I don’t eat there often anymore but the kids sometimes like it. It feels the portions are smaller too at a much inflated cost.

Fast food has priced itself out of my diet. If I'm going to be paying $15+ for anything substantial, I might as well get something fresh and better.

It's wild to me how inflation has really crept up on the lower end of the food perspective where cheap eats for arguably low end, garbage food is actually quite expensive.

I see it sometimes with friends chasing these deals like 1/2 price appy's thinking that $7 for fried pickles, $15 for frozen chicken fingers is somehow a big time deal. They have gone out, spend $60 to eat garbage food when there are countless restaurants we all frequent that offer great good for a $30-50 entree.

The only thing left is a foot long sub, cold cut combo, for $11.00. Wife and I share for $5.50 per capita, a quick lunch and we’re off again.

Hard pass on Subway or any of those sandwich places for me. Shiny, sweaty meat sitting in a box at room temp below the counter is your ticket to a bad tummy day.

Default You Know What Really Grinds My Gears? Now with 3x more gears...

There is nothing at Subway that I couldn’t make myself just as easily and cheaper That’s basically my metric for eating out. Sandwiches are almost zero effort to make.
