Depending on what kind of vacation it is. Sometimes, I'm barely in the room so the only thing I care about is cleanliness and location.
Other times, the hotel IS the vacation, in which case I don't care if location is off the beaten path, as long as it has nice amenities & food.

Oh and I completely agree, I just mean, within reason.
I went to Vegas for a wedding and my room was amazing, but it was also only about $150/night. For me thats fine, part of the Vegas experience is crashing in the room after a long day.
I just think there is element of diminishing returns after a certain price point. Like...how much more am I going to love a $1000/night room than a $200/night room?

20% off and it's still around $1000/night.
Plus i don't like the rooms in the either of the hotels. they are so small and old... lol
My first real job was with AB tourism and they served us a course in every restaurant in both hotels. It was great! but the hotel rooms were kinda crap.

Not true at all. In my family the attitude was the hotel is a room with a bed. If you can get a good night's sleep and it's clean, that's all you need. Save as much as you can on that and put more money elsewhere to improve the vacation experience outside of that.

Nah, I need top notch accommodations. You spend at least 10 hours a day in there. Sht, shower, bed, etc. Plus I want to wander around a rad place.
I actually refuse to vacation anywhere that is worse than my house. If it's worse I just rather go home.
Staying in sht-holes sucks.

This is how us poor travellers mentally convince ourselves the bed stains are a novelty and the electric shock shower is charming. Don't take that away.

Funny, I was ringing doorbells this afternoon looking for the parents of a toddler we found and nobody was answering. I started to think they thought I was a salesman.

No, had to eventually call the police and have him incarcerated. Poor kid couldn't have been older than two and is going to be institutionalized before kindergarten.

I'm not liable to spend a ton of money on a Hotel room that I'm basically just going to use as a base of operations and for sleep.

No. And there is a reason for that.
Look...I've stayed at some awful places in my life, so I am accustomed.
I stayed in a room in Rome where, n the bed, there were Cigarette ashes on the pillow and, I kid you not, a knife-gouge, with bloodstains, where the occupant's chest would have been.
They graciously agreed to change the bedding and assured me that whomever it was wouldn't be coming back. I stayed there a few days.
I once stayed in a Motel room that someone had been broken into and the door wouldnt lock. I came back from my day at one point and they'd taken the door off entirely for repair. Talk open 'open plan.'
One time I stayed at a place that didn't believe in having a door between the crapper and the bedroom.
I could write a coffee table book about crappy hotel rooms I've stayed in.
Literally, last weekend, I stayed at a Travelodge in Lethbridge and you know what? It had a bed, a TV, coffee maker, fridge, microwave, a little desk even and a clean bathroom. Nothing wrong with it at all. $90/night.
And there was a pub and a liquor store downstairs. What more do you want?? Walking distance to the Japanese Gardens.

Oh man, some of the Hotels, motels and hostels I've stayed at contravene the Geneva Convention.
But most of the time? Its just a place to lay your head and have a shower and then its back at it.
I'm just saying, you can get a nice room for less money, you just have to acknowledge..."what are you really here for?"

The only hotel room Ivehad that I couldnt stay in was one in Port Alberni, room was nice, clean but when I turned on the AC unit it sounded like two raccoons fighting over a bag of empty cans. Tried to do without the AC for an hour but too hot, too humid. Had to ask for, and got, a room change.
The guy that showed up to try and fix it, banged on the side of it, same as I did, didnt work for him either. Said I should have called sooner.

That's funny, I can't imagine going on vacation and spending most of my time in the hotel. The point is being somewhere novel to explore and experience but to each their own I guess.
I also think going on vacation to sit at your hotel and get hammered is for morons too. You can do that at home for a fraction of the cost but I guess for a lot of people getting out of their daily routine is enough even if you’re doing the same thing somewhere else but you get to pay a premium for it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not really. I happen to like most of that stuff. But I’m planning an overseas trip next year with friends, and they’re like Locke and Corsi - the hotel room is just a place to sleep for 8 hours. They care about location, but they don’t care about how nice the room is, the bathroom, towels, the shower, etc.
When I threw out numbers like $250-300/night for rooms, the response was “nah, we don’t need to stay in fancy places.” People have different expectations around this stuff.

I've backpacked Europe staying in hostels. I've tented. I've slept in the back of my car. I've slept on concrete floors of basements. I've stayed in crappy motels with pubes (not mine) in the bed.
At this point, though? All my vacations are luxury. I like a day or two of exploring, then a day of chilling. Hanging in a nice condo, drinking beers and smoking weed on the patio, making steaks or something for dinner...I don't need to be running around like a madman on my holidays. They're all about chilling and going at a slower pace. A mix of drink, food, poking around and chillaxing.
Anybody who doesn't think my way is best is objectively dumb.
I don't spend "most" of my time at the hotel, but every minute there I want to enjoy so I'm having fun 24/7. I've gotten old and spoiled - literally impossible for me to have fun whilst staying in a dump.
BTW, I'm not even talking about spending an arm and a leg. I wasn't kidding when I said I've stayed at nice Holiday Inns. When not looking to break the bank, I just look for a brand new chain hotel and they're always clean and nice, IMO.

k, well let's pretend budget doesn't factor in. Literally everyone prefers a nice place to a #### one.
