Honestly I kinda feel the same way about the Banff Springs.
A lot of hype but low on substance.
Maybe not the rooms themselves, but I've gotten a private tour from a friend who worked there at one point and being able to go through all the secret "back of the house" passage ways and down to the old bakery in the basement showed a ton of cool history.

We used to get bored and give ourselves tours. Once you found the secret doors you could see a lot of fun stuff.
I dont know, the only time I really spend in High-End Hotels is if I'm attending a wedding or an event or something, otherwise, for me...the Hotel is just a room.
As long as it's clean and has the basic amenities I'm not really too fussed about it because when I'm traveling...I'm not going to spend much time in my room.
I'm not liable to spend a ton of money on a Hotel room that I'm basically just going to use as a base of operations and for sleep.

I have certainly seen my hotel philosophy change over the years - probably with a rise in income.
I've stayed in some dives across Europe and typically of the mindset of "as long as its clean and safe, im good."
But man, after a long day of travelling or sight seeing, it is sometimes so nice to come back to a super comfy bed and a nice big shower.

Banff Hotel prices. wtf? $800/night for some crappy 3 star on a weekday night in June... lol
We used to stay twice a year before Covid at the Rimrock and it was $210 to $250 a nite...
I stayed at Lake Louise fairly recently and i believe both Banff Springs and Louise offer 20% discounts for AB residents. It's buried deep in their website though, so double check.
I'm a sucker for a nice hotel. Great amenities, location, service and a spacious, well designed room makes a huge difference in my enjoyment of a vacation.

You just described literally everyone.

I've stayed at better holiday inns. I think that place is garbage. Have no clue what the appeal is.
Yeah but what do you know. You think Lake Bonivista is a great community! haha
Room sure could use work. hence the renos. I liked it because it is walkable to the hot springs and the gondola, which was great when we had little kids. and they loved the indoor pool there.
