Banff Hotel prices. wtf? $800/night for some crappy 3 star on a weekday night in June... lol

We used to stay twice a year before Covid at the Rimrock and it was $210 to $250 a nite...

You'll need Corsi trust fund money levels to afford Banff now.

My friend rents out a condo in Deadman’s Flats for $400 per night, almost always booked, all seasons. Nice little gold mine.

Word is the Condo Act will be changed to prohibit short-term rentals.

Ugh. maybe i shouldn't have sold my Canmore condo.

My coworker told me that her brother inlaw was getting married at Banff Springs in July and said it was $1700/night for her room, but i thought it was only the 5 stars that was crazy expensive. Not 2 and 3 stars! lol

Rimrock is closing for renos in Oct. Also they're owned by the same group as Fairmont now, so I'm sure that has something to do with rates rising.

I think there was also some type of negotiation for time shares as well.

Second, the thing I'm building sits on property I do not own - it's family property, but I'm not on title. Its monetary value essentially doesn't matter, because none of the plots of land there or anything on them can be transferred to anyone other than the direct descendants of my great-grandfather. Also it's like 90% just... woods. As a result all the money I'm pouring into building it can't be recovered, except to the extent I airBNB it for a couple weeks a year, which might net me a few thousand but will never get close to covering the building costs. It's essentially the same thing as the boat everyone is talking about - a hole you dump money in for the hope of enjoying your time spent in said hole.

It's also not a vacation property, really. You could characterize it as a retirement property that I'm just building early with the tradeoff of being hilariously house-poor (such that I am not among those you'll see at Model Milk). But really it's just my inevitable contribution to the family enclave. My great grandparents built a house there, then my grandparents, then my dad, then my cousin, next my brother and probably my other cousin. So it's more like my place in Calgary is my "work property", it's the only thing I can actually sell for money. And when I do, I will have one small house and at most a joint interest in the property on which it stands, and if everything goes to plan, a small and manageable mortgage.

Not only don't I have "#### you" money, I have "God I hope nothing bad happens" debt.
That is so cool, I didn’t know you could put restrictions on land/inheritances like that. Brewster’s Millions ran through my head.

I think a lot of people are in the bolded situation. I know the pile is bigger than the hole, but the point is to enjoy the pile, not sell the pile to fill the hole.

5? Mine are 3:30. For some reason my brain believes that is time to not sleep anymore.

Knew about the renos, did not know they are part of Fairmont now. Hence the $1000+/night pricing. lol

I stayed at the rimrock for the first time this year, honestly didn't really like it or see the appeal.

Haven’t stayed there in a while but I recall my only complaint being their damn elevators. I always hit the down button trying to get to the lobby from my floor forgetting that the hotel layout is basically upside down. No one needs that kind of hassle after a few drinks.

It was pretty dumpy for what it should be. Restaurants weren't great and hard to get into. Definitely not great.

I've stayed at better holiday inns. I think that place is garbage. Have no clue what the appeal is.

Wasn't that one of the projects the government got into to "diversify the economy" or an I mis-remembering.

I think it was actually a project conceived by the Mudders and Tapers Drywall Union. That's all that place is...acres of drywall. No sense of gravitas. No wood. No mountain vibe. Just drywall and art from Home Sense.

And ashtray columns by the elevators from the Greco-Roman period. Are those still there? That was the 90's when you could still smoke inside, so perhaps they repurposed them. They make cool plant potters.

Edit: Oops, didn't see that someone else already mentioned the closure/renovations.

Honestly I kinda feel the same way about the Banff Springs.

A lot of hype but low on substance.
