Not really uncommon to avoid weather, clearance is easy, fairly routine on short jaunts between Toronto and Montreal.

I think most people go into the shop and say "I need winter tires that will fit my car", give them the year, make and model, and the guy says "we have three options", and they say "give me the cheapest one."

Honestly, that's not even a totally unreasonable approach. I remember at my poorest buying Walmart house brand winter tires and they were better than all seasons.

I guess it also depends on how you want to spend your time. I need a set of tires this spring and honestly, I’ll do minimal research. I’m not that interested, and while I won’t buy the rock bottom “no-name” version, I’m not after some super high end performance tire. I might browse around here or just ask for advice at the shop, and that’s probably the extent of the research.

I've said something similar in the winter tires thread before, but I'll say it again - I think winter tires are a strange thing to skimp on. There is a meaningful difference in performance between bottom level winter tires and the good ones.

When it comes to spending a few hundred dollars more for a top-tier set - that can be used for 3-4 seasons - that can make the difference between crashing and not of your vehicle that's worth tens of thousands of dollars (not to mention the occupants, etc)... Just doesn't make sense to me.

Edit - that being said, like in Sliver's case, bad winters are better than nothing.

Well I suppose that makes sense, but you’d have to have evidence that there’s a massive gulf between the midline tire (for example) and the other name brand. If we’re talking about most of these things being close to the same and some people just like Coke instead of Pepsi…well I just don’t care enough.

I went on the Kal-Tire website and put in my car info, then picked out the most reasonably priced ones that still had good reviews. I drive in from Airdrie every day and there was definitely some rough weather times, I had no issues with the tire performance all winter so clearly this strategy worked fine lol. I will look up what they are for you all

Ask and you shall receive!

https://www.tyrereviews.com/

This guy does YouTube videos to go along with the testing data he posts, and he makes the videos pretty interesting for what most people would think is kind of a dry subject.

The reason I switched from Michelins to the Continentals was simply that the Continentals provided 95-98% of the performance of the Michelins but for nearly $75 less per corner. Hard to argue with that value proposition.

Aside; we had the "Ongoing General Automotive Thread 2.0" and have now taken over "The Ongoing Super Mega Weather Thread v3".

Calgary's car-centric culture strikes again!

That guy does a good job illustrating how bad some of those budget tires really are. I understand that people want to save money everywhere they can but there's a lot riding on the tires of your vehicle. The welfare of yourself, wife, kids, oncoming traffic, etc. If you are hell bent on buying budget tires at least do a little homework to ensure you are getting the ones that are least terrible because some of them are barely road worthy IMO.

I ended up going with Michelin’s because I’m a fancy bitch and love spending a ridiculous amount on tires.

Michelin in the summer, Hakka in the winter. Feels like an ultimate setup. I really love KO2s but I literally never go off-road so they just seem absurd.

This is the tire thread. You have to go to the AI thread to complain about the weather.

I was really tempted to run Hakka R5 SUVs just to see how ridiculous this thing can be in the winter, my friend's nephew runs Hakkas on his old Jeep Liberty and they're otherworldly in the snow.
