When Ben Hutton is your second best pick over six draft classes you know you failed miserably.
In saying that his ability to steer clear of free agency and not overpay when he did was definitely shrewd.

This is bang on. Gillis has elite organizational skills & roster construction ability, but terrible on amateur scouting.
Seravelli pointed out that the most important skill set as a GM is being able to assess talent.
The ability to interpret where it is a fit (professional scouting) or where is can be a fit (amateur scouting & development).
Everything else is dependent on effective organization (very important) & utilizing the foundation of talent assessment. If you’re overpaying for anything you will have cap problems, but overpaying for replacement level talent you could have developed is a self inflicted wound.
Treliving wasn’t the worst at this, but also not the best. Conroy was definitely as asset for him.
What I also like about Craig is, like Treliving, he’s able to gather a range of opinions and listen to them to inform or enhance his own.
This was the opposite of Sutter & also what Jay Feaster completely offloaded to those around him.
Craig has also paid his dues in the crappy rinks in crappy weather to watch, identify, recruit, & develop the Hathaways, Duehrs, Mackey & Jooris’s… aka free assets.

Jason Botterill is set to interview for the Leafs GM job now. According to Seravalli, he is now the leading candidate.

IDK, Tee's moves aren't looking so hot at the moment...he probably should have stayed with the Flames. Can't imagine the PR would be good for any team hiring him. Leaf fans were losing it.

Tre just an important UFA walk for nothing and then let another force his way out. If the Leafs needed tweaking then Tre would get the job. Bad optics for sure

According to Seravalli, Botterill is No. 1 on the team's group of candidates. The Daily Face-Off insider did hint at more names to come, but his Tweet identified Marc Bergevin, Brad Treliving and Peter Chiarelli - in that order - as other possible prospective options for Shanahan and Co. to paw through.
|
I can't see any Canadian market accepting Chiarelli as GM, especially Toronto as he was so bad in Edmonton I just don't understand how he even still gets interviews. Also Bergevin is almost as bad. Shanahan would pretty well be setting himself up to be fired hiring those guys.

Tre has great relationships in media, particularly with LeBrun, and they've been giving his candidacy the full court press. But I'm not surprised that the longer this goes & more people they interview, the less shine he has. Botterill is a great candidate and would be a better choice for TO, imo.

Yeah, Treliving is a media darling and a pretty big name, but I have my doubts that he will be as sought after as some people think. Especially in a market like Toronto, which while having some advantages over Calgary, is not a complete day and night shift. A lot of the challenges in Calgary exist in Toronto.
Was he ever even interviewed in Pittsburgh? I know that allegedly the Flames didn't give permission at first, but it was reported that they relented. It wasn't too late for them to call him in for an interview as they did that for Kyle Dubas who became available even later than that.

Not sure I would want to take over the Pens or Leafs right now
Neither have much for assets to improve, cap space is tight, and expectations high.
Leafs best player has them by the nads

What? The Leafs have an amazing situation. 3 star players under 25, more guys being brought up yearly, little long term lock ins. I think they have a great roster to work with. It may require some tough talks on some of the no-trade clauses coming in soon, but there's no way anyone wouldn't want that situation to work with.
Pens are a different situation. Malkin and Crosby are Pens for life, and for whatever reason they see Letang in the same way. They don't seem to have much else who they can trade. They're going to be Edmonton soon enough. That's going to be a hard roster to get back on the winning path when they're old and haven't drafted particularly well.

I think Treliving to Toronto is a done deal. At this point I think Shanahan is interviewing others to get a handle of what the most experienced think they should do with the situation they’re in but ultimately with the background Treliving has, along with the connection his dad has to Tannenbaum, this is done.

25, 26, 27. Still pretty good ages for continuing to attempt to tinker and win with that roster.

I am pretty sure that TSN even had video of him in Toronto. I would assume that any candidate not currently working would want to be there in person.
