This is a different game now and you need to take what the other team is giving you, and every team gives you something different. It's why the Avalanche are Stanley Cup champions, they adapted best to each team they were playing. It is also why the Flames got absolutely destroyed by two players in the playoffs last spring. Sutter had no answers for them and they had a field day against the Mickey Mouse systems that Sutter had the Flames play. The only thing that came out of that humiliating loss was a broken Jacob Markstrom. That was on Sutter and his refusal to adjust. The game has passed him by. You can't win in this league by trying to knock your square peg into a round hole with a sledgehammer. It just doesn't work anymore.
Talent isn't "dropped in your lap" when you finish that high. You have to work for it. You have to commit to being bad enough to be in a position to get these picks. The Flames have never been that way. They have fought this tried and true mechanism and have instead worked towards mediocrity. Once you get it through your head how bad your organization is you should accept that you have to burn the ships and commit to going for that elite talent.
The Flames have been very lucky and did have a core player "drop into their lap" when Vancouver made the bonehead move of not selecting Tkachuk and going with Olli Juolevi, so it has happened for the Flames.
|
All true, Sutter doesn’t do much now except rolling out the same lineup day after day.
That said the Flames are so much outgunned, does it really matter what he does? They are going to the gun fight without the big guns
The only thing that can possibly save them are a Hasek in goal and a impenetrable defense and they have neither

Got home from the game late last night and instead of being pumped with adrenaline, I was/am depressed about the team’s performance and the future of the franchise.
No doubt after the second goal last night you could visibly see the team sag, but there’s way more to it than that.
We were close enough to watch the bench on commercial breaks and there is/was no energy!
My opinion is what energy there is was negative. No smiles, no encouragement from player to player, nothing.
So many invisible players and forgettable shifts… wow!
I had to remind myself which team played on Friday night and then travelled back for Saturday’s game… the Avs did, not Calgary.
Which team was without their best defenseman and arguably one of the top 3 defenseman in the league?
I was most disappointed for my kids as they were looking forward to the game and experience all season. That performance last night was overall very weak and definitely gave us all nothing to cheer for or be excited about.
Perhaps the biggest disappointment is thinking about the fortitude and direction of this group.
We would have been somewhat encouraged by a better effort.
Markstrom has to go, sit, or be buried in the minors as we all know, he’s lost it.
Sutter should call it a career and move on at the end of this season. He is not part of the solution.
Tre should not be renewed as this franchise needs a better vision and plan for the future.
I appreciate Backs and Pelts efforts, but that’s about the only positives that I saw last night.
Sorry for the Debbie downer, but there doesn’t seem to be anything to look forward to in the near term and some scary contracts long term.
One last note: watching numerous Flames games in Denver, even game 3 in the playoffs a few years ago where Calgary got pummeled, there were some game breakers that kept the Avs on their toes so to speak.
With this team, there are no dangerous or difference makers out there.
How much of this is the players and how much is the system? Debatable, but I think they are both factors in the on-ice performance and that needs to change in order to improve.

Not going to happen.
According to some people he's donating his time coaching us because he's the only one who cares lol.
Seriously they just extended him will they pay him to go away?

Said in another thread, Flames as a team out chanced, outworked and played their system to generate enough chances to win last Saturday, Monday, Wed and Thursday.
They missed opportunites to put games away early thanks to posts and wide open nets, and should've gotten 4 wins outright, but only got 2.
Bad puck luck? Both for them by not scoring at critical parts of the game and letting in goals at the same critical times of the game? Sure.
But you cant say they weren't generating chances, or not executing Sutter system, or outworking and outplaying the other team for the majority of each of those games...they were hitting posts and not getting that final, well timed goal against the Flyers or Knights, to put their opponents out for good.
So narratives about not playing for Sutter or not talented is just not the answer, becuase they are both playing well enough, and generating chances to win but don't have that last killer blow. Inconsistent goaltending doesn't help to team morale and confidence but the Phoenix game goes to show they can over come that too when pucks find their way in, instead of hitting posts.

I started watching this game out of curiosity to see how they would show up. It often dictates how the game goes based on the first 5 minutes.
I saw the Avs score 2 goals on their first two shots. I saw next to nothing positive from the Flames in those few minutes.
I decided to turn the game off and get some extra sleep. I woke up feeling rested and happier for not bothering to watch them flounder the rest of the night.
I think this is the prescription for many of you going forward. Don't bang your head against the wall hoping for something different from this team. Spend your time doing something more productive and you'll all be happier for it. I know I am.

This was a tough one, Flames really needed the win.
Same thing every game, lots of shots, just no finish what so ever

Why pray tell would you assume what Sutter says in a press conference would ever come close to what his actual game plan is or what he says behind closed doors with his staff and his roster?

They don't need a rebuild. Just hold on to picks, move a few pending UFAs if anyone wants them, fire Sutter and start next year with Pelletier, Zary, Ruzicka, Duehr and Wolf as regulars. Lucic, Lewis, Ritchie gone.

Pretty impressed with this Avalanche team last night. Get Landeskog, Makar, and a couple trade deadline adds in the lineup and they'll be breezing to the Stanley Cup in 14 games again.
As for Calgary...just sad. The team clearly lacks the top end horses to have any real chance against the leagues top teams. It's like they operate under the pre-lockout CBA where they're spending all their money on 28 year old and older guys and have too many pricey mid roster guys who are not able to match top talent. Until they get to a place where the best and highest paid players are in the 23 to 30 range.. it's going to continue being a mediocre team at best. This offseason they got older, slower, and more expensive. .which is the triad of death for a team. Need 3 seasons to reset everything and likely a good 8 to completely flush it out. Look at the Avs...they went sour around 2008 and it took a decade for them to re-establish what looks to be a sustainable elite team.

with all the close games this year, if Huberdeau was on pace for 90 points even, this team is likely in the playoffs, bad goaltending and all. i cant believe we are stuck with him for 8 more years. I find myself longing for the young guns era........almost

14 wins gets them 2 wins from a Cup. They probably would be happier with 16.

Guess Huberdeau needs an Allan Walsh tweet to wake himself up after every game.
What a disappointment.

My point is that the West is not very good, and the Avalanche are the one team who could be. They were 12-2 to get to the cup last year. I think the same could happen this year.
The East is much more competitive, and whoever survives likely has a lot of wear and tear on them.

With Markstrom there is hope on the horizon with Wolf. Far from a sure thing but hope is all I need.
I have more concern with Huberdeau.

Or we need a coach who knows how to utilize offensive talent.
Having him go out with the one man show nightly isn't working but Sutter keeps sending that group out.
The offseason should be a good time to allow Sutter to retire and walk away and this organization to do away with anymore Sutter family hires.

To late to fire anyone and firing Sutter right after extending him was unrealistic.
Any moves with this team is in the offseason.
I think based on his relationship with the owners Sutter is allowed to retire or given a administration position and not fired.
The team does need a coaching change.
