I'd actually love to be proven wrong, as that's an annoying salary to have on the books, but I'm not seeing it happen. Best bet with Valimaki is to trade for another struggling prospect with a $1-$1.5mil salary.
You're underrating cap space relative to recent success or lack-thereof of a prospect.

How do we find out which/how many teams had a claim on Valimaki? Would be interested to see the impression of him around the league.

So all the talk that the Pens were high on Zahorna was BS? You would think that he would be claimed by the Pens and immediately sent down to their farm team if that was the case.

I don’t think Valimaki was ever going to make the main roster. Betting they tried trading him with no takers due to his contract.
Probably best for both parties that he moved on based on the Flames surplus on dmen. Just too bad they couldn’t get anything for him. Like a draft pick.

Maybe. Maybe a dozen teams did, Coyotes pretty high on the waiver wire. You just hate being wrong lol.

Relax dude just asking a question
Yotes are also one of the only teams that don't care about cap space. A dozen teams didn't make a claim.

Amazing that he got claimed. 1.55 for a tweener is too high.
I loved Valimaki and thought he was a great pick, but he was clearly behind Mackey and Meloche during preseason, nevermind Stone and everyone above that. A young defence and another prospect on the farm like Poirier who would probably pass him this season - I am relieved he got claimed.
Valimaki was a fantastic pick at the draft, but somehow the wheels fell off. Maybe it was injury, maybe attitude (someone mentioned twitter and instagram posts that he 'liked' that made mention of trading him, or putting him on another team - if so, good riddance, as attitude is just as big of a roadblock to development as injuries are).
Maybe he finds his game in Arizona, maybe not. I don't really care. I am happy that the Flames have more flexibility now. They can manage their roster a bit better, they can claim someone else that another team is trying to sneak through on Monday, they can have that cap space to help in a trade, or just bank it until the trade deadline. 1.55 for a tweener is way too much, and having .425 sitting on the farm as dead space is a waste, especially when it comes to banking cap.
I guess that at least one scout or GM noticed how good Valimaki was early in his career. However, I will put my chips on what I consider to be the league's best "defencemen whisperer" Darryl Sutter who consistently helps both young and old defencemen become better. Really pleasantly surprised.

I'm surprised someone took his cap hit, he wasn't even very good in the AHL let alone the NHL

I’m glad someone took Valimaki. Every little bit of cap matters and he just isn’t good enough.

I thought he was becoming the next Heiskenen. Not sure if it was the injuries or the pressure, but it’s a dang shame.
I hope he can become an NHLer but I don’t think he ever becomes a top pair man we thought.

Hopefully Valimaki can get his career back on track, injuries really derailed what was looking like a promising career.
Bemstrom and Leason are two guys I would take a look at claiming. I think Leason is probably the better fit as Sutter is probably looking for more size in the top 9. Leason had good defensive metrics last year and still only 23.
I do wonder if they take a shot at Gauthier, I wouldn’t because there is very little hockey sense or defensive awareness there. That being said the size and skating ability is intriguing.

He has yet to even prove he is a tweener IMO. Tweeners are too good for the A, not good enough for the NHL. We have yet to see the former from Valimaki.

Valimaki getting claimed is a good outcome for all parties.
Calgary frees up a contract / possible cap space for a deadline acquisition if in playoff contention for a player that it was clear was never going to get there with this organization. Allows other better alternatives to have a clear road to support roles with no ambiguity or obligations either.
Valimaki gets a much needed fresh start and probably last chance to make the NHL. If he can’t crack the Coyotes he does not belong in the NHL so we’ll see.
Arizona gets a “free” acquisition of a Dman with previous good upside.
Mackey and Stone are better dmen and deserve it more as well.

Arizona wants to lose and Vali passing the puck to the other team will help with that

This isn’t a big lose. What’s Valimaki’s QO next year and what would he possible do this year to earn it? He’ll be a UFA in a year anyways
The disappointment of how he progressed doesn’t make it a bad decision

Darn shame. Initially he looked like the total package. I had him tagged to be a future top pairing guy until his injury took him out.
