And it’s not about hockey? What? Please list all the other amazing things we will have that we didn’t before if we get a nice arena, other than a few concerts because that horse has been beaten to death.
I also question your vacation choices if you only travel to cities to visit the hockey arena.

Holy blinders lol...the discussion is the "Saddledome literally falling apart", to which a side discussion is replacing said arena. The Arena *NEWS ALERT* hosts a variety of other events besides hockey. In fact the "New Arena" was billed as "Event Centre" and continues to be referred to by the city as "Event Centre". The Committee formed by the City of Calgary to engage the CSEC (among other groups) is called Event Centre Committee (ECC). But by all means call it anything you want but it does not change what it is.

Why is it hard to believe that a new event centre would attract more and bigger events and concerts?
They're spending hundreds of millions of dollars upgrading and expanding the BMO centre for the very same reason. To attract bigger and more conferences and exhibitions that would never consider coming to Calgary previously. We're the 4th largest city in Canada, we host a world famous event every July, we have an international airport that services over 15,000,000 passengers a year(pre-pandemic), and we're at the doorstep to a world famous national park.
A new event centre and the redevelopment of that area is the final piece. I think it has the potential to transform not only the area, but the city and truly make Calgary a more desirable destination.

Do we though? I live in California and I've never met anyone who has heard of Calgary, never mind the Stampede.

The Calgary Stampede is definitely a world famous event. That doesn't mean everyone everywhere has heard about it, but it does get referenced in American popular culture outside of Calgary enough that I think it counts as North American famous at least.

I seem to recall hearing it mentioned in an episode Star Trek: TNG before, but can't find a source for it, so maybe I am dreaming it.

I’ve had a number of people from the middle east (never mind Europe) that knew of Calgary because of the stampede.
It’s surprising how well known it is.

I believe Wesley once mentioned going to Calgary to go skiing while he was at Starfleet Academy. I don't know about the Stampede.

Most people I come into contact with have heard of Calgary, but only some of them have heard of the Stampede. Its not Mardi Gras or Carnivale anything of that stature. It is a big rodeo and fair but for comparison over two million people attend the Houston rodeo, is it that famous?
Mostly I feel that Calgary is known for the oil industry and the natural beauty of being close to the Canadian Rockies. I’d put the Stampede a distant third behind those two things.

Yeah, I live in California also. When I tell people I’m Canadian, they usually ask where, and when I say Alberta, if they’ve heard of it, they always talk about the Stampede.
I’ve never been, but it is very well known.

Major Charles Emerson Winchester III probably dissed the Stampede.

Yep we have had a lot of customers from outside the continent try and schedule factory acceptance tests at our facility during Stampede week.

When we were in San Francisco in July at a Giants game, the couple beside us were very engaged with us after they heard we lived near Calgary. Turns out they were fans of Heartland and had obviously heard of Calgary and the Stampede. The husband was born and raised in LA. In 2015 while doing a bike tour in Rome, another couple on the tour lived in Stockton, now the Heat had just relocated there, but they both knew of Calgary (TBH the Stampede was not discussed).

I can't speak for nik, but this habit of never qualifying or explaining your position besides a generic statement of "both sides" implies you do believe both sides are equally to blame. Maybe try not making bland, generic statements that actively shy away from taking a position, and clarify what you mean, instead of bloviating pointlessly and expecting people to read your mind in what you haven't said.
If you don't know, and couldn't say, who is more at fault in the arena debacle so far, why opine at all? What do you seek to accomplish? A victory for neutrality?
