They are currently over, but they HAVE to move someone in order to fill out their roster. Once they do (likely move Puljujarvi or Barrie, IMO) they will need some league-minimum players (preferably deuchebags, apparently)
Well, Jake certainly fits that role but he has never been particularly good in the NHL (or the KHL for that matter).
It does seem like a match made in a dumpster fire.
The smart move would be to dump Barrie with a incentive, even eating half of his salary and sending a decent draft pick would go along way on the cap situation, and make him decent trade bait, though the Oilers blueline would become even more awful
I don't know if they could "even eat half"... they need almost the entire amount if they hope to sign Mcleod and get to the full roster size. Assuming they sign Virtanen to 750k and Mcleod to 2 Million... and another player to 1 million... that 4.5 million barley gets it done with only about 333K to spare....so very little to work with on those 3 spots if anyone gets more.
I think they'd want to move Foegele... I doubt his 2.75 million would be enough though on its own. Puljujarvi is not much bigger at 3 million... Barrie at 4.5 million seems like the amount they'll need unless they do a combo of players.
My God, that team is easily the most unlikeable collection of dirtbags in the entire league. Even worse than the Canucks back when they had Burrows, etc...
Is it really shocking to people that the owner of this club in particular (the Oilers) seems to be disinterested in larger societal concerns about players and their treatment of women?
Smith (D bag/bad teammate)
Neal (bad off ice/no good on ice/dick)
Draisaitl (pissy)
Nurse (punches teammates)
Kane (you name it)
Virtanen (lazy/bad rep)
led by a lunkhead diver who can't even bring himself to level mild criticism at Hockey Canada

Nobody is taking him at a full salary hit of 4.5 million. unless its with their first round pick or a guy like Holloway included.

For some reason, the Edmonton Oilers have signed Jake Virtanen to a professional tryout
According to The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler, with Virtanen off the ice last season at even-strength, Moskova outscored their opponents 81-71, a 53 percent share of the goals scored. With Virtanen on the ice, Moskova got outscored at even-strength 16-21, controlling just 43 percent of the goals scored.

Bringing in Virtanen has already angered the fan base, and if this in any way projects a potential Jesse Puljujarvi trade, it’s a fireable offence.

Except they can't sign him - they don't have any cap space and are currently over.
If he gets some pre-season time with one of the wonder twins maybe he can generate enough interest to get a contract offer from a team with actual money to spend, but the Coilers have zip as Capt. Crunch noted a few posts up.
Right, but as you yourself point out here, this is probably a good decision for him, since he is likely to get more playing time and exposure in Edmonton than he will garner elsewhere.
