I think you're right. I think he gets the big contract and the captaincy to go with it. Flames aren't rebuilding

I'm going to look at this much more rationally in the coming days and weeks, but for now:
Get ####ed, Gaudreau.

Tkachuk will have much better trade value with cost certainty and term.

Weird.

The Flames, Cup contenders next year after losing a top 5 forward in the league and having nothing to replace him with is not a likely option.

Real nice of Johnny to royally screw the team on his way out for leverage. What a jerk move

It does seem like he used the Flames to get his money elsewhere

It’s pretty hard to compete with some US markets…. The state tax in NJ is 6.6%, that’s way cheaper than Alberta. He may get less per season but he will net more elsewhere……

This was a bad way to end what was a long and positive relationship.

Flames need to rebuild but Treliving isn’t the GM to do it. Flames are f’ed anyway they go from here with a GM of Treliving’s ability. Biggest blow to Flames franchise in decades.

It's all good. Everyone's high-strung right now and I feel bad for Team Positivity atm. And dissentowner was the captain.

My guess its the opposite, Tkachuk was watching to see if Gaudreau would resign.
My guess he will accept the Qualifying offer.

That's what it feels like to me. They wanted to see what was the max the Flames were willing to pay and use that as a benchmark going into negotiations with other teams.

For me to accept these kinds of things in all the sports I watch I sometimes have to invent little narratives for myself to cope. I have already developed a few:
A) We never went anywhere in the playoffs with him - maybe that changes without him.
B) We now have between 9.5 and 11 million dollars to retain our guys and sign others
C) That contract is going to look terrible in years 6 and 7 when he stops producing
It's all BS maybe, but it's what I'm clinging to for now.

I'll take Johnny's word that he was truly conflicted about staying or leaving. I believe him when he says Calgary means a lot to him. Don't really fault him for deciding to leave and don't really fault management for trying to keep him. You don't make a trade just because you're afraid of losing a player in FA.
NJ is actually a pretty exciting up and coming team if he does end up there. Wonder if we can trade Tkachuk there too and get some of their young assets.

Has there been an update on who the other players were that wanted out if Johnny doesn't sign?

The worst part of that is that we really do have a solid young B-core to surround a newly drafted A-core around. Guys like Mangiapane, Kylington, Andersson, Lindholm, and Dube could definitely be a supporting cast for a Connor Bedard if they'd just commit to trying for that outcome. Move Backlund/Tanev/Hanifin/Coleman for picks and prospects essentially.

It would be very wise for 19 to act in a way that gets him long term value now, because he ain’t putting up the same numbers without Gaudreau.
I personally prefer a sign and trade. Build from the middle out, not around a top line winger that can’t skate.

I am okay with signing Tkachuk long-term and making him the captain. However, he should be traded if not signed before the start of the season.
I also hope they can trade Lucic and Monahan.
If not rebuilding, I hope they at least re-tool.

He is 24 years old.
People were flipping out that the Hawks would trade Debrincat since they are rebuilding.
They are almost the exact same age. Tkachuk was far more productive, yet people want him traded.
I just do not get it at all.
