One of the funniest things I read in an ATL last season was the Philly fan saying "Calgary, the Martin Erat of teams." I didn't even believe in that assessment at the time, nor do I now; it just made me laugh.
That being said. Cringe.
Ok with standing pat if the asking price was clearly too high. Get it done at the draft.
If true about that Frolik+1st for Zucker rumour, I wonder if Frolik simply said no to Minnesota.
This is my gut feeling too.
The fact that Boomer and Ryan Leslie both reported it as being pretty much done, to only just reverse it minutes later makes me think something outside of the ask is what caused it to break down.
So what would you consider an upgrade on the second line Simmonds zucker or nyquist?
All 3 of these players don't have that much better stats than Bennett and Bennett has proven he can play a dirty physical game and drop the mitts with anyone
Wasn't a fan of Simmonds. I certainly would have been on board with acquiring 1 of Zuccarelo, Nyquist or Hoffman.

Point remains. The Flames needed to upgrade the 2nd line RW position to have a legit chance at a long run in the playoffs, IMO . If it was because they didn't want to lose a late 1st round pick for a guy who was a UFA at the end of the season, that's a fail.
The city and fan base has been stuck supporting a franchise whos won 4 playoff series in the last 30 years. Its not like we've been spoiled with success. I think if anything this tells me management doesn't think they are true cup contender this year and probably thinks the young guys need another year of playoff experience before they are willing to trade any significant assets to go on a cup run.
How can it be a fail to trade assets now if they need another year of playoff experience to actually go on a run?
That makes zero sense.

Last time the Flames had a team even remotely close to as good as this team, they were "winners" at the TDL acquiring Jokinen to play as C for Iginla... that worked out great for them, right?

See lots of people sad the Flames aren't adding...in recent history the smart play has been to not go crazy at the deadline:
2018 - Washington Capitals:
Jerabek for a 5th
Kempny for a 3rd
2017 - Pittsburgh Penguins:
Hainsey for a 2nd
Corrado for a 4th, Fehr
Streit for a 4th
2016 - Pittsburgh Penguins:
Schultz for a 3rd
2015 - Chicago Blackhawks
Timonen - for a 2nd, 4th (0 points in 18 games)
Vermette for a 1st, Dahlbeck (7 points in 20 games)
2014 - LA Kings:
Gaborik for a 2nd, 3rd, Frattin
2013 - Chicago Blackhawks:
Handzus for a 4th
The teams that have won were teams that had sustained success - Chicago, LA, Pittsburgh, and Washington were all contenders for 5+ seasons in their cup window. Drafting well and re-filling the cupboards with cheap ELC players is what allowed them to do that.
Trading all future ELC depth (Valimaki, Dube, Kylington, 1ST) for one kick at the can this season would be the worst decision our team could make.
Just a reminder that making the biggest deal on trade deadline guarantees you nothing come playoff time.

That's a video game trade. Bennett's value is finally being realized, and I feel like his progression is back on track this year. He's our most physical forward, he makes the line he plays on better (he drives the 3rd line more than jankowski and whoever's on the wing).
No point in trading Bennett, he's going to be an important playoff player for a team that lacks much physicality in the forward ranks already.
That's why I said I like Bennett. But we also lack a top 6 RW and Granlund is a great player who fits that bill.

LOL.
Although, Tampa is not the Flames. They are still going to crush everyone and win the cup. It's a dog fight on the other side to see who gets to be the sacrificial lamb.
