the only reason it was a close game tonight was because of Elliott.
As much as I dislike the coach, the whole team was brutal tonight, except for the Goalie. Maybe Backlund & Frolik were alright.
Get Johnny to play with them and move Monahan & Chaisson to the 3rd line.

Also you do realize his +/- is immensely skewed by the three games where Kulak was playing and dominating against bottom pair competition, right? Outside of that, he's been a drag on Brodie shift after shift in an actual difficult role. We've got Dennis friggin Wideman playing a shutdown role for us so Brodie can babysit Engelland.

Haha that video you posted was clearly Brodie's fault but since you're such an advanced stats guy and have used it in several arguments why don't you post some advanced stats for Engelland. I'd love to see how he's fairing in that department.

Engelland had been fine this season, Brodie was actually struggling much more before he was paired with Engelland this year.

Actually, a Brodie that has confidence in his D partner (i.e. Wideman, or Giordano, or Russell, or Hamilton) never throws the puck blindly up the board hoping for a clear. And a D partner that has Brodie's back does something about that play, either tying up Panik's stick or letting Elliott make the save on Toews on the wraparound and clearing the rebound, instead of getting caught in no-man's land and taking himself out of the play.

I use information where it is relevant. Here, common ****ing sense is more relevant than advanced stats - Engelland is not a top 4D and having a +/- on the right side of 0 does not change that. But if you think the advanced stats say anything different from what I was saying, we have three seasons worth of data that we can look at:
Brodie-Engelland
439:28 TOI together (before last night)
38.5% Corsi For (for some comparision, the only NHL team since the stat's been recorded, to finish with corsi this bad were the 2015 Sabres, who were tanking for Connor McDavid)
44.4% Goals For (driven heavily by the best goaltending Hiller and Ramo ever gave us in Feb/March 2015)
This is a pairing that has no business being together. It is a pairing that makes me miss Kris Russell.

That pairing was a tire fire 2 seasons ago when Gio was hurt but I actually haven't minded it so far this season. They still don't have great possession but it's not as bad as it was in 14/15 and the coaching staff has relied on them for tough d-zone faceoffs.
Issue for the coaching staff is that Gio and Brodie have looked horrendous together so far this season and Brodie - Hamilton didn't look great (although I would have tried it for more than a game since they were good outside of two glaring mistakes that ended up in the net).
Fact of the matter is that Brodie hasn't looked good with whoever he has played with this season and he has the team worst Corsi% and GA to show for it.

Giordano-Brodie
Hamilton-Jokipakka
Engelland-Wideman/Kulak
I'm fine with those pairings. If he wants to play Wideman with Gio on the power play I'm fine with that too.
That said, Wideman, Engelland, and Jokipakka aren't why they lost tonight. I thought all three of those guys had stronger games than Giordano.

What the hell are you talking about? They were playing with or outplaying the best regular season team in the NHL. They just couldn't capitalize on their chances.

Engelland was giving up the puck like crazy, when he had full possession. He's bad for firing it along the boards into traffic, or else trying a chip out that is not high or hard enough. He just doesn't seem to be able to make a pass out of the defensive zone.
He's fine at the other stuff in his own zone - clearing the crease, fighting for the puck on the boards, being physical. He's a non-factor offensively.
I don't think you can pair him with Wideman - neither can skate well enough. You either go Engelland-Kulak, Engelland-Jokipakka, Wideman-Jokipakka or Wideman-Kulak on the bottom pairing. And limit ice time.

Yeah, I hate seeing Engelland out there with Brodie. He's a fine third pairing guy, but that's it (and needs a good skater with him even there).
Brodie-Giordano looked bad for their first few games, but the whole team did, and Brodie continues to look bad compared to where he was. As does Gio.
But when Brodie gets it together, I would prefer he doesn't have an anchor.

Isn't Brodie playing his off-side? (Or rather, his natural side where before he played his off-side).
I'd say it's more likely that's why he looks a little uncomfortable than his D partner (who I actually think has been pretty effective)

It's hard to understand how you can't find two solid pairings out of Brodie, Gio, Hamilton and brand X. If this team can't make two effective top pairings, it is a season killer.
And really its not the coach. Those three guys need to get the job done.

Oh, well if you were at the game and I just watched it on tv that certainly strengthens your argument.

Yes it does actually.
That's why NHL scouts watch games live and not on TV.

As ridiculous as your argument sounds, i was at the game too and the Flames dominated the first 10-12 minutes of the 3rd and should have tied it

I myself pretend to, but ultimately suck at it. I don't even win hockey pools most of the time.

Just posted the Kulak thread but honestly if it were up to me I'd run the pairings like:
Giordano - Brodie -- we really have missed that backhand saucer pass from the opposite side on the rush that Brodie dished out time and again last year, they need to look at tapes and see the value Brodie brings on his offside. Gio and him complimented eachother quite nicely when they were running at their prime.
Jokipakka - Hamilton -- Hammer should not be getting 4 mins average less than Wideman per game, we invested top 4 money into him, he's not even 23 yet and has 270 games played already, give this guy minutes already.
Kulak - Engelland/Wideman -- If he's staying up we need to be giving Kulak minutes over two UFA's who won't be back. Kulak can play, he looks more than serviceable to eat 6th man minutes.
Hopefully we see Gio/Brodie at the very least, it needs to happen.
