On one hand, I like the idea of Ferland being on that line as he does possess some skills to create space for the other two, while also playing the role of Gaudreau bodyguard.
But on the other hand the guy has a Matt Lombardi-level of finish. There would be a lot of close-but-no-cigar players out there with him.

Unless you are aware of something I'm not, I put more on weight on the fact that Burke and Brouwer would know him very well and would certainly have been asked about locker room presence. Also, Tallon brought him to Florida. People familiar with the guy wouldn't re-hire him if he was that bad. Hopefully, that perspective will help you feel good about it. Plus, he shunned the Oilers. That's worth double what the Flames are paying him....

Shafted Edmonton? How so? Looks to me like they didn't sign him.

Guadreau does not need a bodyguard. No player in today's NHL needs a bodyguard for that matter.

Are you selectively reading. Confirmed they offered him a contract.

And if that leads to better numbers/production, it'll set him up for a better contract after this season.
Playing in Edmonton as a 30 year old you're taking a chance at killing your career by how players values seem to take a hit playing there...particularly if you're getting buried up there. Not a great way to showcase yourself. Kris made a smart move imho.

Whatever happened, not sure why Versteeg would stick around Edmonton - or ANY team - that has two clearly defined top RW's already in house. Lucic and Eberle are guaranteed the top spots, and Calgary had a spot available on the top line - with Gaudreau and Monahan. Who wouldn't want to do that??

I don't think he needs a bodyguard in the Dave Semenko sense where you need a goon, but the guy still has his wrists slashed on a regular basis. It would be nice to have someone out there with him who can at least respond to these instances with some bite.

Lucic is LW. Versteeg would have been the #2 RW.

Retailiation =\= deterrency
The only deterrent to that kind of situation is making the opponent pay on the ensuing PP.

Apparently that spot has already be claimed by either Draisaitl playing a position he never has before or JP who looked completely lost in the preseason. So Oilers.

I'd much rather sure-fire tap-in's end up in the net than off the post or into the corner, which is a much bigger issue with Ferland on the line than Versteeg.
I don't get this trepidation about Gaudreau. Physical deterrents don't deter #### anymore. Gaudreau is going to continue to get slashed until it becomes an obvious problem and then he'll start getting the benefit of the doubt on the calls.
The Flames need offense though, and I don't think they can rely on their defenders to all have 40+ point seasons anymore with the new coach.
Versteeg can finish plays, it would surprise me if he has a huge season points wise ala Hudler in year 1 with gaudreau and monahan. Someone who can finish turns Gaudreau into an 80pt or 90pt player.

To start the season he would be 3rd line but the Oilers right side depth is a mess and throughout the year he would have steadily been 2nd line.

"It's the start of free agency and before July 1, I told my agent that at the personal level, I have two young children now and I want to be close to home," Versteeg told CalgaryFlames.com. "So Calgary and Edmonton we're two places that I really wanted to key in on and try to be a part of their organizations.
"I couldn't thank Edmonton enough for the opportunity coming into camp and through negotiations, we decided to wait a little longer and talking to the Flames and feeling their excitement, it made me excited.
"It's a huge part for me, being close to home with my family. Being on a team that's on the verge of winning, too …They're a young team with a lot of great young talent. There's a lot factors."
While he grew up with a 403 area code and spent a large chunk his junior career with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Versteeg's childhood allegiances lay with the Flames' rivals up north thanks to his parents.
Mom and Dad, it seems, will have to swap allegiances in the Battle of Alberta.
"I was actually an Oilers fan growing up, so was my mother and my dad, but my grandparents are Flames fans, so there's always the argument within the family," he chuckled. "I was really never given the option, but for my parents now, they just cheer for whoever I play for. Their loyalty to teams changed the minute I started playing in the NHL."
