I don't think he's close, just closer. Still not really shooting the puck, weak wrist shots, almost shoveling puck.

Quite honestly, Gio being out there with the guys even if he is just "shoveling" the puck has to be a huge motivator.
When he got injured, everyone was saying he's out for the season, no chance of coming back. While still likely he doesn't play again until next year, he's showing the team that no matter what the odds, he's still working hard. That has to rally team and create a mindset of hard work and dedication.

Let's be clear here:
The stuff I posted above was NOT from an interview with Baertschi, nor from any public statements. Tomlinson was relaying things he had heard, and spinning his beliefs about what Baertschi should be feeling into a story about a successful outcome for the Canucks in tonight's game.
I tend to think that some of it is probably accurate, but there is still a lot in what Tomlinson said that is nothing more than desperate grasping at invisible straws.
But the real story here is not so much about Baertschi's fragility and purported entitlement. The real story is the almost stunning unrealistic expectations being foisted upon him by a city and its media who appear to have already lost any tangible hope for the Canucks to win this series. It's the only explanation for why they can be clutching so tightly to these pipe dreams about a borderline NHL player.

He hasn't really been in a spot like that in the NHL since then. Of course, the playoffs are a whole different monster compared to no pressure games to round out a season...

He was a top-line mainstay in the AHL and played adequately well. He just hasn't been very effective in a couple of years now, and it was especially obvious this past season when player after player on the depth chart slipped past him.

If you don't count the game in Winnipeg where we rested our best players we are 6-1 in our last 7 games.

I have a feeling this is going to be a very anti-climatic game for the Canucks.
Their team is mentally weak, their coach sounds mentally weak, and I think these guys are already booking tee-times. As long as Calgary comes out like they did in game 3 and 4 and start murder smashing them from the puck drop, I have a feeling they are just gonna fold their tents. That team is just too frikkin soft. And the only grit they have in their line-up, can barely skate anymore, and is looking over his shoulder anytime he has to go near a corner. Sven, unfortunately, is going to be the poster boy bullying victim for a generation, and we as fans, are going to cheer wildly for it.
This game is either gonna be a squeaker win by the Canucks, or a blow out by the Flames. I'm going with the blow-out myself.
6-2 Flames.

nor should they be....underdog or not you only get so many chances in your career. Flames had one of the best teams in the NHL in the early-mid 90s and never even won a round.
In 2004 the team was a major underdog but in the following years the same cast with what seemed to be upgrades never won a round.
The Calgary Flames have been past the first round ONE TIME since 1989, lets make it two

Legitimately feel sorry for the Canucks and their fans having Baertschi as their best prospect. That's rough.
I don't consider Horvat a prospect and I think Virtanen is a future 3rd liner.

I used to be in the 'launch Stajan into the sun.' camp. But it is obvious this guy is an incredible leader and mentor for these young guys. Kinda has a Dave Lowry vibe to him.
I am thinking part of Stajan's issues before, were the core around him at that time. I always viewed him as support player in the Iggy core. It's becoming more and more apparent, how lackadaisical that core was. Everyone seems to have a NTC, everyone was making huge bucks, and nobody had anything to lose. We are in the playoffs, and guys are still playing for roster spots on the big stage, and it shows.

I like QR77 because you don't get the same bias that 960 has due to holding the broadcast rights. They also tend to interview the TSN personalities who no longer are allowed on the FAN.

There is a team like that in this series........
I agree I was all for dumping Stajan into the Bow, but credit where it is due.
I am sure I heard that he is leading the NHL in face off % this playoffs.
Is that right?

Same here.... really done a 180 on Stajan the past few months, I'm glad he's on this team.
Tough decisions to make next year though, somebody has got to be moved if Bennett, Ferland and Granlund are going to make the team.
