Over the next four games, the Flames play Columbus, Vancouver, Minnesota, and Dallas. They are all in the bottom half of the league in goals per game (also, all below the Flames, who are 13th).
Minnesota is 26th, and Columbus and Dallas are tied as the lowest scoring teams in the league.
They don't really face a high-scoring team until St. Louis on the 15th.

Somewhat unrelated but since we're on the topic of Columbus and Tom Erixon, who is a bigger jerk? Schultz or Erixon?
|
Well since you are posting on Calgarypuck and not AnaheimDuck it would have to be Erixon.
Too funny both of them ended up in the 2 laughing stocks of the league.

It's the perfect storm IMO. By the time St. Louis rolls around, Kipper might be ready. The next few games are going to be very interesting, so I'm rooting hard for Irving and Taylor... unlike some of the guys on the Fan960 who almost sound like they want Irving to fail.

I hope Irving really makes it hard for Hartley to decide who to start, I really do. I really love Kipper on this team but a 36 year old goalie shouldn't be our best player. Hopefully Irving pulls a Schneider and creates a goalie controversy and some interest in Kipper

Why? Marty Brodeur is still playing lights out.
Not out of the ordinary for goalies to remain at an elite level well into late 30s.
Kipper still has a lot left in the tank.

There's a huge difference how they play.
Brodeur is not a butterfly goalie, prolly the only non-butterfly goalie out there, so his "span" is a bit longer. His knees and what not won't get worn out as much as Kippers.

a: Kipper does not play like Brodeur
b: Brodeur is the best goalie that ever played in the NHL
c: that's a terrible analogy
d: his contact expires soon
e: we are getting Ramo next year hopefully
f: trading Kiprusoff this season in a seller's market could net us a return that becomes invaluable

When was the last time a 36 year old goalie was traded, and netted an invaluable return?

Dallas did just get Benn back in the lineup and as soon as he get's going the Stars will not only score more goals but get more wins. The Stars aren't a team that can be taken lightly.

When is the last time an elite goalie had a cap hit of ~ $6M and has an actual cost of $1.5m (2013-2014)?
This alone is very.... marketable for the small market teams.....

atleast according to the Fan. Shortened season, lots of desperate teams fighting for contention. There are a lot of teams that seem to be on the upswing this year that think they are one piece away and have a logjam in a certain position. Now is the time for low risk high potential reward moves, at this point if a team offered a combination of a legitimate NHL'er or a high ceiling prospect you'd have to take that.
What is the point on riding out his contract until he retires and getting nothing for him? He is no longer under a NTC, at his salary there are a lot of teams that will atleast look at him. It's a gamble yes, but it's almost a necessary one you have to take from an asset management standpoint, allowing assets with value to expire is a mistake. When the Flames are on the winning side of a series of trades and signings we will start to get better, the Wideman and Huddler signings are a great start. The idea of holding on to him from a nostalgic sense of attachment will turn this boat right the hell around and turn us into the Islanders of the past decade.

Torie Peterson @ToriePeterson
Jay Feaster's confidence in Leland Irving seemed very evident today. The organization trusts him & Leland himself looks confident.

He was third in games played because unlike the other two he had a finite number of allowable games to play and would have been better used later in the season if the lockout went for the full year, and it made more sense to play their actual full time goaltenders more often.
He wasn't the third goalie based on them being better, it was a contract constraint. The fact that he didn't show well in the few games he played though made it appear as he was the third stringer.
|
PTO game limit is 25 games. After that expired, he was still eligible to sign a second PTO for another 25 games. So he was looking at 50 games total in the AHL this season under PTOs.
So basically Irving wasn't playing because he wasn't showing enough in practice & his limited games that warranted him playing over Brust/Taylor (which says a lot considering the organization should be pushing heavily for him to get starts even if he isn't the best option at winning).

I am sure I heard Feaster say on the fan once, around the time Irvine arrived in Abbotsford, that the AHL PTO was for 10 games, and he could sign up to two of them.

No, JayP is right, it's 25 games. Irving could have played more but when he played, he didn't do well. Still Irving has shown he can play in the NHL, the other two (Taylor and Brust) haven't.

I love Kipper and all but Id love even more to see is Irving play so well that they cant take him out for a while even after Kipper is healthy. Kipper doesn't need a backup so much as he needs competition for his role, at least from the standpoint of we can win with either guy so lets play who is hot right now. That would be the best thing to happen here. Not to over-rate Irving but I would be wary of under-rating him.
