I agree, they made it last year and it would be good to make it this year. But it's not a lock even if they pull the trigger today.

Also, the plan for them is probably more the next 2 years than this year. Make the trade, if it's reasonable. But if we are trading Mercer for Makrtsrom, IMO that is enough. If you want salary retention and Vancek coming back. Give me a 1st. If the Flames are asking for top prospects too, sorry it probably doesn't make sense for the Devils as they are 5-7 points out of the playoffs right now.

If I were them, I would just revisit the issue in the off season.
One of the teams they’re chasing lost their starting goalie to sexual assault charges, and doesn’t have the horses up front NJ does.

Markstrom would have them in the playoffs inside two weeks.

Hot goalies can also carry teams in the playoffs injuries or not.

Devils still have enough talent to score, they need saves.

And even if they miss, they get to start next season set in goal.

I understand the logic, but I’d have to imagine this year matters a great deal to the players and if management outs this season that might create some ill will. The pendulum swings both ways and maybe the acquisition cost impacts the current structure, but much likely the Flames making moves when Gaudreau was in the final year of his deal, Jersey management is accountable to the present roster.

If they were an older team I would agree with your thoughts, but this team is entering their period of contention and they need to do all they can to fortify this season, and build for the next 5 -7 and a good veteran goalie is a necessity for them.

Friedman saying today on the Marek show that the Leafs would be ok with sending their first for a RHD with term.

Sounds like a sign and trade to me.

They are 7 back of that team, their top dman is injured and their best players other than Hamilton are 20-25. They do not have to cave into our demands.

Mercer for Markstrom is a fair deal for both teams. If you add salary retention and taking Vanecek back, you maybe get a 1st.

There are teams that could broker the 25% and might do it for 3 years for a 2nd or 3rd.

Coyotes/Hawks, Ducks, Jackets or Sharks- 25% Markstrom Salary and 2nd from the Devils
Flames - Mercer
Devils - Markstrom

That is easy for you to say because you are not the owner and don't have a financial stake in it. Owners want their teams in the playoffs if possible because playoff revenue is worth millions of dollars..

I’d rather retain that 25% and take vanecek for 1 year and get the 1st ourselves

This is consistent with Treliving in the past. He has frequently traded 1st round picks for players with at least one full year left in their deal. To my knowledge, he has never traded a first round pick for a pure rental.

If Tre thought he could add something meaningful to the team and retain their 1st he's going to get a reality check at the deadline.

For Toronto, right now a deep run is worth much more than a 20-25th pick in a weaker draft.

He isn't managing the Flames any more but is clutching his picks like he is. TO's window is wide open.. go ham old guy.

I agree, but we are all looking at it from the Flames perspective.

The Devils would rather give up a 2nd, maybe they want both goalies for this year? Vanecek out played Markstrom last year and $7.9 mil on 2 goalies is not a bad amount to spend.

Mercer for Markstrom is fair, I hope Conroy does better, but the Devils aren't in must win the cup now mode yet is all I'm saying. Why would they pay a ton more? Would we want that as Flames fans in a couple years loaded with stud young players to trade a ton to get a 34-year-old goalie? Probably not.

Unless they desperately need playoff revenue, it makes more sense to wait from their prespective if the demand is too high
It's not always about winning the cup. It's also about progression of the team.

They have a ton of young talent. They had a great start to the year last year, but tripped up in the playoffs - learning experience. This is a push-forward year, but it is being derailed by a single problem. Losing breeds losing and bad habits. If I am the GM of a young talented team, and I can see a solution to pushing them to the next level, I am doing it 100%. And not doing it is a fireable offense (a phrase I hate)

Right - get Markstrom, start winning and even if they don't make the POs or get knocked out early, they are continuing a building trend.
