Then we need a better word to distinguish reporting from punditry or activism. Perhaps it is better stated as he is not a reporter and his column is not News. His content and many other columnists whose goal is to drive outrage are not appropriate sources to discuss current civic issues. People here should do better.
As I said I agree with Rick Bell. The bag law is stupid. So it isn’t me disagreeing with his message. It’s that it’s not design

Quite right - I am blurring the lines between the federal plastic ban and the city bylaw.
I suppose I can try and rephrase my sentiment - I am OK with adapting to new ways of doing things (not getting a handful of condiments and cutlery by default, remembering to bring my bags, etc.) but where they lost the public is making relatively low-impact items like paper an enemy similar to plastic.
I mean, a paper drive through bag. Sure I could pass my linty, dog-hair-covered, re-usable bag through the drive through window and say "load 'er up", but does that make sense?
If people have a viable alternative (like remembering their grocery bags before running in), they can get used to doing it. But it has to make sense.

Right now, it's nothing.
First there will a public consultation period - which will likely last until March, then admin will make recommendations to revise the bylaw based on the comments received, then Council will vote on those recommendations.
That's why nothing will likely change until May.

No, like with the cough guards and tongs that don't fit on the plate to hold them.

The prevailing opinion a few days ago in this thread was that the city budget didn’t include a discretionary cent, yet there were clearly multiple people, including senior officials and administrators, that thought this policy was a good use of city time and resources. Yikes.

I thought the bag bylaw was rather stupid until I heard that Rick Bell was against it. Now he'll feel validated with its repeal. It's a sad day in Whoville.

I think it was intentional by Chu and Gondek took the bait.
He's a complete POS but this was pretty crafty IMO.

It's really not. Don't make chu into some savvy political tiger here. His choice of words sucks for an elected official with a history like his, but no one should be surprised. He's a weasel, a coward, and an awful Councillor. Nothing more.

I still can't believe that man had a gun (Chu). Or did they only give him the crime scene tape to put out?

Speaking of debasing oneself, the fact you can still say something like this after what I think is a pretty thinly veiled call out for being unable to defend or justify the actual bylaw and what it's meant to accomplish speaks volumes. Seriously, that's it, hey? It "made [you] think twice over whether [you] need a bag", whooptie f--kin' doo. Hey everyone, the rainforest is saved because PepsiFree didn't need a bag for his Filet O'Fish one day. Still nothing defending how this bylaw made *any* logical sense whatsoever.

I just got my 90-day notice for my rent renewal; $300/month increase starting in May after just one year. Council could, y'know, maybe vote to implement some form of rent control to stop skyrocketing costs of living for people, but that would be too pragmatic for this council.

Rent control is a provincial matter so it's up to the UCP to implement that, not city council.

Well then, that's never happening with those turds. Whee. I wasn't sure if it was something that could be set at the municipal level or the provincial level. In either case, the fact that Council is happy to pass more costs onto consumers for no benefit doesn't give me any confidence they would if they could.

Reducing the amount of waste is part of the solution. How many times previously have you said “sorry, no bag for me, don’t need one.” Sorry you struggle with using your brain on this one, keep the outrage machine rolling, Rick.

You think Sean Chu leveraging his notoriety as a rapist to make Gondek appear offended is a win for him?
