Occupy Calgary Statement
http://calgary.ctv.ca/servlet/an/loc...ub=CalgaryHome
Quote:
Statement from the People
To: Members of the Media; duly elected representatives of the City of Calgary Council; Mayor Naheed Nenshi; Bill Bruce, Director of Animal and Bylaw Services; Rick Hanson, Chief of Police; Chief Justice Neil C. Wittman; Tom Sampson, Deputy Chief of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency; and especially to all members of the public.
For almost two months, we have been a living crucible where every imaginable emotion, endeavour, and dream of humanity has been confronted and thrust upon us, every day. A crucible where the clamour for dignity, justice and freedom for humanity has confronted the united by a common desire for a nobler humanity and with the desire to craft a map on which all the people of Earth could plot an inspired trajectory for humankind. As community, we are united by the internalization of the struggles of all people, from the indignity of the debt-bondage of our neighbours and nations to the ongoing, slow motion genocides of the indigenous people of our World.
This community has exercised not just peaceful assembly but the meticulous assembly of peace in our public park in the heart of our City. Where else but in our hearts can the passions that drive our ideals, our dreams, and our compassion flourish?
Are congratulations in order for this victory of bylaws and disregard over unquenchable ideas? Does the mountain of paper, bylaws, lawyers, police, false testimony, and disdain heaped on us by our government deserve accolades for its triumph over free expression? Do we celebrate that we now take part in a society where we cannot express ourselves and peacefully assemble in a public park with reasonable access to shelter and warmth while doing so without unreasonable threat of eviction, conviction, or jail? Are these the signals that our society is not free or truly democratic?
In the space where our community once stood, we leave a physical monument, "The Heart of the Beast" to all the human suffering in the world, past and present, and to our desire to overcome. Embodied within this movement are the convictions and determination of those who continue to seek and have sought out, throughout history, humanity's noble course. We humble request that it be seen as a permanent reminder to all people who visit Olympic Plaza of all the voices throughout history that have been silenced.
|
I just take offense at their concept that the city and its citizen's are somehow denying their right to free speech, they are free to protest as much as they want, they seem not to understand that camping is the problem. They continue with their demand for shelter and warmth in their squatters village and then end it with the whole, we are martyr's the government doesn't want us to be heard and want to silence them.
There's a reason why in a city of a million people there are only 10 protestors in front of that statue.
On reflection, I don't mind that statue, I don't think it belongs in the plaza though. The city should put it up for auction, and use the proceeds to pay for park maintenance.

I'm confused by that letter. When was there a denial of right to protest? They can continue protesting all they want as long as they aren't using public space to live. If they want to continue marching down to the Plaza or Park (whichever they feel like protesting at) every day, they can go ahead. I don't really think squatting on public property is part of the protest itself (and if it is, is part of what sunk their support because the taxpayers they wanted to win over had to foot their bill, no matter how much it works out to per person...that is, besides no having any unified message as an occupy camp).

I dunno, I kind of agree with him. Why should some random a-hole who wasted city halls time, court time, cost the city money in many ways, and just generally annoyed most of Calgary get his artwork displayed and recognized.
I'm sure there are many legitimate artists who would like to have there artwork displayed downtown.

Hmm I don't see it that way. I think he's been incredibly effective at getting his message out - something the OC crowd could learn from. The reality is that I suspect that Mr. Morgan is taking an intentionally extreme viewpoint in this debate in order to make his point.
It has worked well.
He also hasn't followed anyone home and invaded their privacy.
I have more respect for how he's handled this issue compared to how the bulk of the protesters have.

It's not the point he is making, it's the way he makes it. He is a whiny brat.

Ok, now I'm confused. The media is making a big deal out of the fact that the occupiers are down there right now (past the 2pm injunction deadline). Wasn't the whole point of the 2pm deadline for their tents, so it is no problem that they are there now (sans tents).
Right?
Does the yyc media just need to try and cook something up since they were really hoping to get some skull-cracking footage today and came up empty handed when the tents were gone this morning?

Eh they just need to play the victim one more time, instead of "we hope the discussion will continue" they've chosen "we've been silenced" as their swan song. If anything they are probably feeling a little defeated because they didn't "change the world" with their little camp out.
Nobody likes to say goodbye at the end of summer camp.

Any other news happening in Calgary this afternoon? Slow news day combined with a group of people who said they were willing to be arrested for their convictions = coverage.
I agree this storie's done, they might get a few more sound bites this afternoon, but I don't think they'll be any arrest. At best they'll get video of the city loading that sculpture onto a flat bed.

I don't see how he is Mast, I think in a lot of ways he's been more efficient in dealing with the Occupy Group then the media.
Frankly he went down and took pictures of the site, he got interviews with people down there, he did nothing that's different then the Occupyer's with the exception that he was well organized.
I think his counter protest was pretty smart, it exposed a problem with how the Occupy movement was being dealt with in terms of bylaw enforcement.
Its pretty sad actually that one man created a far more sympathetic counter protest then the actual protestors did.
He took advantage of his free speech rights and protest rights and to an extent did it right and effectively. The Occupyer's didn't and they really allowed themselves to be played by Cory.

Yeah, and usually at the end of summer camp you have multiple accomplishments including the whole finger bang of the girls from the camp across the lake to feel good about.
That and the councillers made sure that you took a shower before you got in your parents car.

Since the sculpture is called "The Heart of the Beast" I think it would be cool to put it near "The Device to Root out All Evil" (the upside down church in Ramsay). Perhaps those two pieces in close proximity would cause some sort of summoning power to the underworld and unleash an apocalypse upon us (sort of like spook central in Ghostbusters).
Yeah, my mind is running pretty loose this afternoon.

Every been afraid to google a term? I think Brony might rank up there with Fotze.
