I have the Blu-rays of the original trilogy and, for the most part, they look great. Well, except for the garbage cgi added later by Lucas. Most of the time it is distracting and completely unnecessary. A 5 second shot of the exterior of Jabbas palace? Better add a creature in the foreground doing something stupid or the audience might get bored and stop watching. That's how a lot of the prequels felt to me, just a barrage of poorly thought out cgi.

We have been doing the same thing with the kids. We finished #4 last night. I am really struck by what a bad movie it is. The dialogue is poor, the production quality isn't great.
I completely agree with the CGI. It is now a game with the kids, can they identify the added in CGI?

Lol...
Unfortunately you're downplaying Lucas's CGI meddling. He added entire CGI dance sequences, Greedo shooting first, a young and trim Jabba, Hayden Christenson (all the other ghosts are older, but Darth is his young self), ...and Gungans into RotJ?

I was able to get 6 tickets to the noon showing at Country Hills Imax on Saturday. There was lots of decent seats left.

Ya it was all so shoe horned in and obviously stuck out, it was down right painful to watch some of it. The dancing singers at Jabba's place were the ones that had me laughing out of embarrassment.

They kind of had to retcon Hayden in as Vader though due to the direction they took in the prequel trilogy.
In ROTS you had Anakin burned and cut in half, his force ghost shouldn't be some older guy with a full body because Vader had never taken that shape.
You get the young Anakin because that is really the last true image of "Anakin Skywalker".

He was a ghost...he can be healed from his injuries. Mentally, when Vader died, he was not a young man and had returned to the light side of the force. It makes sense for his final image of himself to be the aged, yet healed, version. Essentially, he presents as what he wanted to be and what he would have been had he not turned.
Lucas gave us Hayden, just because he could.

At least with some of those you could make a case that they add something to the movie. I certainly wouldn't make that case. In fact I think they absolutely detract from the movie. But it makes no sense to add a weird creature falling over in the background that serves no purpose and is distracting from the focus of the scene. One of the worst is when Luke and Obi Wan arrive at the town with the cantina. So much #### happening in the background and blocking the scene.

I agree. Obi Wan is the age when Luke new him and died. Vader is an age when Luke never saw him. I thought it was kind of funny when ghost Obi Wan sits down earlier in the movie. Like he has old stiff ghost bones that need rest.

The dialogue is hilariously bad in all Star Wars movie, ultra cheese.
Poor production quality? The movie is almost 40 years old. It holds up amazingly well.

Yeah Star Wars overall is a franchise that was driven by cool looking characters, plot twists, and state of the art production that hold up even now due to the use of practical effects.
The dialogue and acting was never the greatest (although Leia and Hans did have their moments) but it worked since the characters were likable and so original.
I feel like if anything the original movies are not as good anymore because nothing in them is a surprise anymore. You know that Vader is Luke's father, you know that Leia/Luke are brother and sister, you know Hans/Leia end up together, those surprises were so core to the experience of the movies.
Really the prequel trilogies were bad because they missed on all three of these points, it wasn't that the overall plot/story/dialogue was any worse. Nothing was a surprise because we knew where it was going, none of the new characters were very likable, and the over use of CGI made the movies age really poorly.

I mean, its not an Aaron Sorkin script or anything but the dialogue/character development is very above average for the first three movies.

They just wanted to forcibly impose a little law and order.

Yeah, absolutely. There is a reason that all of those characters are immortal, and serialized over and over and over again.

Considering it's a sci-fi movie, I find the dialogue to be top notch. Particularly characters like Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, Leia, and C3P0.
I don't think people understand the challenge of giving good dialogue to a talking robot and not have it seem just awful. It's also extremely to drop a character like Han Solo into a pure Sci-Fi environment and still come across as natural and believable.
