Listening to Yappy Dog talk right now. Just attack attack attack! yap yap yap.
What a god damn embarrassment he would have been to Canada if he became PM.
Is there any chance he could lose his seat in Carleton?

I don’t know, a system that allows minority governments more or less needs this option. I would be in favour of short fixed length campaigns though. You never need more than about 4-6 weeks to make lists and book polling stations.
I think PP should have been pushing for Carney to keep governing. He missed an opportunity to be out front saying this is a crisis we should wait until fall for the election. Carney isn’t a politician so giving him time to have gaff after gaff would have increased PPs chances and he’d look like he was pro Canada.

Okay PP, but what new fighter jets? You gonna stay with the Americans super computer hive mind that may not be allowed to function for us whilst we are battling the U.S in a trade war?

For snap election there is still a required range of
Quote:
The election or campaign period must be at least 37 days and no more than 51 days, and election day must fall on a Monday, with certain limited exceptions. Since 2018, in the case of a fixed-date election, the pre-election period starts on June 30 before the date of the election; during this time, political entities are subject to spending limits under the CEA.
|

So there is a bit of discretion available, but does it matter much? And if a leader couldn't call an election, they could easily engineer one by having their own party vote against having the confidence of the house in a majority, or put a bill forward so distasteful the opposition has to vote no confidence. So it would just lead to more stupid game to get the same result. An election.

I still think the Conservatives have a pretty good shot of winning and I’d probably give them over a 50% chance. Any of the following things could easily tip things back in their favor:
1) Polling bump after a leadership change softens is it did in prior analogous situations.
2) Carney, not being a politician, makes some big gaffes which eat into Liberal support
3) If Carney does run more as a Red Tory as it looks like he’s doing, then some of the voters they’ve pulled from the NDP and Bloc (which make up the vast majority of their resurgence) get turned off and go back to those parties.
That said, I think so far the Liberals are doing and saying the right things, while the Conservatives are doing the opposite. If the campaign continues that way then maybe we won’t see a turnaround.

I don't see Pollievre getting out of Eastern Canada.
If the election manages to not get called once Ontario has said their piece then there's a good chance western Canada give him a minority .gov.

It's an absolute deal breaker. Or at least it should be for majority of voters. How he thinks going into situations without being armed with all available information is bewildering.

I can't believe they're still trotting out these ridiculous nicknames. They might lose the election in large part due to them. They're silly, they're boring and people are sick of them. They feel Trump-y and childish. I can't believe anyone involved with that party's strategy thinks they're a great idea.

People who dislike the Conservatives are sick of them. But in retail politics, slogans work. Especially among the low-information voters who make up a big chunk of the electorate. You and I may not like his style, but Poillievre is a very effective campaigner and communicator in today’s information environment.

Smith's comments have proven to be a huge boon to the Liberals on day one of this very short campaign. No wonder Pollievre seemed to be seething through his fake smile while completely dodging that question.

When Carney was just asked that he said, would you want to vote for a Cdn Trump or a party that supports Canada?
LOL. some reporter just asked if he supports abortion, because he went to church this morning... wtf.

Right? And his reason is absolutely asinine. He wants to be able to criticise and comment on topics and can't do that if he reads the material directly, but apparently he can do so if someone else does, and he hears about it second hand. He wants to lead through rumor rather than fact. I'm ####ing sick to death of outrage politcs and PP wanting to keep that 'attack dog' style is unacceptable.

I'll give Carney credit in that I appreciate his new Department of Transformation and their focus on inefficiency within the government and public service.

Perhaps a year or two ago, but I would disagree with that today.
The difference now is that Trump is so disliked/hated in Canada and these silly nicknames are quite similar, they will definitely turn off some swing/independent voters who see the two as comparable. Would his stupid nicknames poll well with his supporters? Sure, I can see that. Would they go over well with undecided voters right now? I would say not a chance, not like they might have a year or so ago. Most people in this country don't want anything to do with Trump, even if it's a similar campaign style.

I'm not saying the question was a plant, but she absolutely knew what the answer was going to be. She wasn't looking for a "gotcha" but probably more to get a response on the record so she and other journalists can address the "he's a sneaky catholic" attacks without having to bother actually going back to him for a response later.
