I'd take the dweeb over Hubey every time. At least the dweeb can make our PP 1000 times better which would be an extra 8-10 wins a season.

The Flames traded for Bouwmeester 4 days before he became a UFA.

I don't think it is that simple. I think some teams believe if they bring him in, they will be able to sell the player on their organization and community which would give them a leg up on signing him long term.
The player or agent telling teams that there is absolutely no way he is signing for your team removes that possibility.

Which is useless to a rebuilding team. Huberdeau is leaps and bounds ahead of Johnny in terms of leadership, training, setting an example of how to be a pro…

This isn't free agency, he is still contracted to the team. Going around telling teams to stay away was classless by the agent. He will get to UFA he can sign with whoever he wants.
How can you say you respect someone so much, but have your agent actively try to sabotage a trade in the background. Makes no sense.
Zadorov was different he was shooting off his mouth, and had his agent throw shots at the team on Twitter, because the team didn't prioritize signing him and rightfully so.
Lindholm came at us with unrealistic demands, and pouted his way out of town, but it looks like his play has carried over to Vancouver and he has killed his chances of robbing a team of a big contract.
|
As you said, Hanifin is/was contracted to the team to perform his duty and he did exactly that. in fact, as soon as those trade rumors surfaced his play went up substantially. He completely outplayed his contract, and did so knowing full well he could have easily packed it in and bided his time before leaving. Instead he played like a top pairing D and drove his asking price up. I respect Hanifin because once the rumours were out, he not only continued to live up to his contract, but out performed it. While I may not agree with his agent doing what he did, I can appreciate a player not causing a distraction and instead upping his play. Very rare to see something like that, let alone a Flames' pending UFA, when so many guys mail it in once the trade request is made.
What his agent did in the background was snakelike, sure. But agents do what is best for the client and tow the line. We now live in a social media age where people are leaking info all the time and it is now a tool to give players leverage. Strange to me that we all hang around the trade/rumours thread waiting to hear about leaks and insider info, but we get angry at the player for "playing games" with us once we find out what the leaked information is.

Hmm, not sure about that.
Yes Huberdeau has been better lately but the bar kept getting lower.
When was the last time after a game it was patently obvious that Huberdeau put the team on his back and willed them to a win as leaders do?
It's fair to say re the last two games (very important games) that Huberdeau took the weekend off.
I guess there were several games where Johnny didn't do much but he was rarely invisible.

Rose-colored hindsight. Johnny was pretty meh in lots of games. As for carrying the team - Tampa Bay game may not have needed a "carry" but Huberdeau set the tone and made the biggest plays. He also made the play that won the Oilers game.
It's pretty rare to say a game was won off of one player other than a goalie anyway.
I do agree with SN that Huberdeau seems like a better teammate. Gaudreau had a small clique and didn't seem to do much for rookies.

We all know about Johnny's training regimine.
When did Johnny take all the rookies out - did he ever do it? When did younger guys talk about Johnny like they do about Huberdeau?
Players seem to go out of their way to praise Huberdeau's off ice contribution. maybe they're gaslighting but you never heard that about Gaudreau.

I mean it's not like they really had the youth infusion they have now when Gaudreau was here. He was PART of that generation of youth at the time.

BY the time he left he was 30. Did he help out Bennett? Ruzkicka? Kylington? Rasmus? Valimaki? Mangiapane? I never heard of it.
But it's not just rookies who talked that way.

What do "we all know" about Johnny's training?
Do people speak highly of Huberdeau's off ice contributions because based on his contract and expectations he is a huge disappointment and they are trying to find a positive somewhere? I don't know the answer.
I always find it amusing when fans can have a definite evaluation of a player's character from what they can see from row 23, or their couch, without ever having me the guy.

We all know his diet was criticized and at least once (2020) was accused of showing up out of shape. Bissonette was one of the accusers.

Some of you guys obviously haven't watched Gaudreau lately
Besides saying we are lucky Gaudreau didn't take 10.5x8 has nothing to do with Huberdeau
