Our good defencemen struggle pretty mightily when they're under pressure as well. Good forechecks are effective. Get a high pressure forechecking going, and most teams struggle breaking out of their own zone cleanly.

Since you spend so much time in the Flames' dressing room, do you happen to know how long it's been since it was painted?
Oh, you mean called out players in the media. Yeah, I'd like to see some examples of NHL captains throwing their teammates under the bus in public before I'll agree that Giordano deserves blame for not doing it.

The “captain of mediocrity” was undrafted at any level and went on to win a Norris. He’s led by example on and off the ice ever since he got the C. If he hasn’t called out any players this year it’s probably because he figures he hasn’t the standing based on his own play.
Tell me who is a good captain in the NHL and why.

Maybe he has, but privately. Maybe you’ve had bad leaders in the past, but good leaders will rarely call out people in a public way. That’s a well you can only go to a very limited amount of times.

Why Bennett garner so much attention with the energizer bunny threads is beyond belief. He's played well for one full game with Gaudreau and Monahan and played OK for another period and maybe half more after that before he became his usual self again. It's like - there are other players on the Flames that deserve more attention - like Mangiapane, Lucic, Backlund, Markstrom, Gaudreau, Tanev, Dube, Linholm, etc... Gio is still good despite his age. Monahan looks a bit tougher this season.

It's going to be very quiet on CP after Bennett moves on.

Really trying to get my head around Dillon Dube this year.
He didn't have much success with Tkachuk and Lindholm, but looked to be back to himself again back with Bennett and Lucic.
I noticed his speed on the attack again ... was interesting that he took two passes off side for breakaways too.
Maybe Tkacuk's basketball like hockey (turning your back and flipping pucks into empty spaces) doesn't jell with Dube's style?
Bennett and Lucic certainly play a more straight forward brand of hockey.

I think it's more a situation of playing against teams that pack it and try to counter rather than poor individual defensemen. You play simple and work rather than falling into their trap of trying to force things through the teeth of their structure.

I feel like Tkachuk is missing Backlund...and I’m not exactly sure why, as Lindholm is proving to be quite a good centre, but the line as a whole leaves me wanting more during 5v5 play, although they haven’t been bad by any stretch.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Mangiapane
Tkachuk - Backlund/Lindholm - Lindholm/Backlund
Lucic - Bennett - Dube
Is this how our top 9 should shake out?

I like Dube and Bennett together. Dube is obviously a better skilled player but I think having them as your third line is worthwhile. Lucic daily, nope.

What could you honestly have against Lucic on the third line given
a) the way he's playing
b) the alternatives

No, because whoever replaces him will become the new whipping boy, and I just have that funny feeling that Benny goes on to have success on another team.

And the juice the team gets when he scores. From the outside it really looks like the team gets jacked up when he pots one.
The NES Ice Hockey celly is top shelf stuff.

I think that, beyond what we see on the ice, Looch adds a great deal to the locker room. He's been good, for the most part, under Ward. There's just some people that he will never win over.

He is playing like a great/elite 3rd line guy should, and i agree his dressing room presence is probably quite unappreciated.
It's not his current level of play that is the issue with him.
Its his cap hit for what is provided and no real way to get out from under it. It's going to get uglier after this year.
But my biggest concern is he still hasn't shown that he is able to leave his friendships with current Oilers in the dressing room, which is/has been/will be a big deal....especially this season as we face them NINE more times. He changes that aspect of his play and its not as bad.

At the end of the day, at least Looch is still playing, where's the guy we traded away for him right now?
This is me saying i agree with you and people who are so critical of looch are just looking at his contract $$

I’d be tempted to try this. As much as Backlund is an excellent center, he’s too good to put on the fourth line. It even makes me wonder about the possibility of trying Monahan on the wing, like was speculated before the season started. Too many good centres, not enough good wingers.

I seem to recall a high profile forward, mention in an interview, that the team was playing a little too cute. Obviously didn't register with #19. I feel he uses game time to practice these, "cute" , moves.

Haynes was on The Point with Boomer at lunch at was saying with the expansion draft coming it's highly likely to be Sam's last season in Calgary. Either traded or selected by Seattle, based on who he'd protect. Said Sam would probably benefit from a change in scenery.
